How is that onside kick not a TD?

A lot of people don't understand that rule, but it does happen often.

Usually not on a late game onside kick though. How about that onside kick coverage of NC State? Ok men, here's what you do. Everyone stand where you are and hope the ball comes to you. If it does, try to catch it. If not, oh well, you tried.

Shafer was right to go completely crazy there on the refs. Onside kick was with 17 seconds left. When Davis returned it they let the clock run to 14 seconds. Then after the replay they put 13 seconds on the clock.

If you can't advance the ball, then how does 4 seconds come off the clock? Is that another dumb runoff rule that accompanies the dumb can't advance the ball rule?

I love this sport, but some of the rules are so nonsensically arbitrary.

I believe so. That's why I hate half the rules in college that are different from pro. The other dumb rules are pass interference and the one where if they guy goes down on a knee without getting touched you can't get back up.

It's one of those rules that people can feel smart knowing, but no one can come with a good reason why it's a rule. I knew right off the bat that he couldn't advance it. 10 seconds later, my father-in-law calls me screaming why isn't that a TD. I said you can't advance an onside kick. He said why? I instantly thought, I don't know, I just know.

Then I watched the replay to see why Shafer was going nuts, hoping he didn't think it was supposed to be a TD. It would appear that our clock operator and even perhaps the refs didn't really know the rule. I mean how else can 4 seconds run off a clock when the ball is dead upon contact?

I followed that up by feeling oddly guilty that my father-in-law, with no ties to Syracuse whatsoever, actually sat and watched that game because he seems to like me. It had to be so unbelievably boring for him. But then again, he's a fan of all things Philly, so he probably likes that I stick by something that seems so hopeless sometimes.

same question as to why they changed the muff rull on punts years ago, or why HS football couldnt advance a fumble until recently. rules that make no sense. once its a fumble it should be advance-able but for some reason they dont wont that rule in the books.
