I feel like with the way this team is set up. We are going to be playing in high scoring high possession games.

ive always thought this is a good indicator of how good the team will be

you often see the really good teams putting up 100 early on ...very few teams that score 100 in a game arent at least decent, if not really really good

i remember the year laron ellis transferred in from kansas and they put up like 108 on cornell and I just knew it was on. they put up 100 4 times that year...they did also happen to have billy owens, derrick coleman etc lol...but still

next year it was 5 times over 100

idk...i dont think red manages to go max score...but now with the NET and the cupckae schedule,...theres way more incentive than ever to run it up

they did get it twice last year...so im expecting at least 4 this time around.

if they can crack 100 4 times or more...NCAA tourney should be a lock, imo

I'm going to guess high, and say six.

100 points for a tempo team isn't that hard. The NCAA leaders average 75 shots per game. If we use that as a benchmark for a game when we are playing well, it would look like 10/25 40% from 3pt, 28/50 56% from 2pt and 15/20 75% from the free throw line. An easy 101 without unusually high shooting percentages.

If we are playing good defense, forcing tempo and turnovers and outrebounding our opponent, 100 shouldn't be exceedingly rare.

I think 8 cupcakes in the ooc schedule are strong candidates to give up 100 points and a few of our conference opponents might give it up on a night where we are hot.

Additionally, there is added depth, where our second unit can continue to run up the score after the starters get pulled. Our second team might be able to win a second half 45-30 after the starters win the first half 55-30 or something like that.

Lastly, unlike previous years, I think classy guy Red is prepared to run up the score to improve our NET rankings. He'll be sincerely apologetic during handshakes, but I could see him slowing down the offense much later than would be his preference (not like we've really had the talent to just destroy teams anyway lately) this season.

Those factors are going to have us scoring a ton in games where opponents are overmatched.

6 is a lot. I looked at the top 10 teams in offensive rating per KP last year, and only one team did it. Alabama nine times. The average for the rest was around 3.

Lastly, unlike previous years, I think classy guy Red is prepared to run up the score to improve our NET rankings.

In previous years it really wasn't a choice to run it up or not. Classy Red was often worried about losing games to Crap School U or couldn't extend the lead much beyond 10 (and not by choice). Let's hope we can actually control these games like a good team should do.

We did it once in 2003, twice in 2010, twice in 2011, and not at all in 2012. Even if we're firing on all cylinders, do we really think we have the talent/depth and that Red will keep his foot on the gas?

LeRon Ellis transfer from Kentucky

Lmao 6 times. We also have 8 future NBA players. Bball season is officially BACK.
You make a good point. Syracuse scoring 100 points has been exceedingly rare.

I think you underestimate a few things, though. We are playing a terrible group of teams in our OOC. Several are expected to be lower division teams in their bottom of the barrel conferences. They are really bad.

Add to that the fact that Syracuse is a lot better offensively and defensively than previous years, and we really should be able to put up 50 point halves against these bad teams. We are going to force a lot more bad shots and force live ball turnovers that quickly go for baskets the other way.

Our second team isn't the dropoff it has been in the past. We'll be running top50 players like Anthony, White and Betsey on our second team, with former ACC starter Souare and former Australian National u19 team player Fennell. The second team being able to continue the rout is a critical part of running up the score. Even if Red puts out the worst squad he has available, there are no more walkons. Lobdell, Womack, Zephir, Diawara and (say) Fennell is going to continue to blow out the second string of these bad OOC teams. And almost all these guys are competing for additional playing time. There is no such thing as garbage time anymore.

Next, the NCAA with their NET ranking has mandated running up the score if you want to get into the NCAA tournament. It is terrible decisionmaking, but what else is new with the NCAA? I think the ACC finally got the message and Red's choices in scheduling makes it clear he got the message too. Normally, you would expect our last 5 on the floor for extended periods once we get up by a huge margin... I think the periods of time Lobdell, Womack, Zephir, Diawara and (say) Fennell share the court are going to be exceedingly short and rare. Winning by 40+ is how you get to the Tournament.

Sportsmanship be damned.

All this adds up to a string of 105-55 type blowouts

6 times, man? 1 singular team did that last season.

Was listening to some college basketball bigwig talk about SU hoops the other day. I think,it was on Steve Infanti’s radio show.

Anyway, this guy liked the talent on the roster but he had reservations, especially on quality the SU defense. Said the past two seasons SU was one of the wrong teams in the country at giving up baskets early in possessions. There is a stat on average time required to get a shot off and we have been horrific at this during the Autry era.

We have given up a ton of baskets in transition in recent years where one or more players were hopelessly out of position or just zone out and let their guy get open almost immediately. But even when we are able to set up our defense, it often just takes a pass,or a quick move and the other team ends up with an easy shot.

I think we are going to score a lot of points this year. I would be really surprised if we are not one of the best teams in the ACC on offense.

The defense still concerns me. We don’t have to be great on defense or even good. We just have to be mediocre. Note that I am not saying that should be the goal, but to me if we want to be in the mix, for,an NCAA bid, we are going to need at least 21 wins and need to be finish in the top third of the conference.

I really think we have one of the top two or three offenses in the conference. If we can just finish somewhere around 9th or 10th in the conference in defense, we’re gonna be a damn good team.

We don’t have a great shot blocker in the middle. We’re going to block quite a few more shots than last year, but there’s no great job shot blocker here.

We don’t have a great ball.hawk heading up our defense up top either. Again I think the guys we brought in are gonna be better than the guys that left, but these are the things you normally build a great defense around and we don’t have either.

Back to the question at hand. Clearly Red wants us to play faster. He wants us to get to transition whenever possible. It will be nice to not have to see him get upset over and over when Carlos refused to push the ball down the court, constantly ignoring what the head coach wanted.

I do think we’re going to play faster this year. I do think we’re going to score more baskets in transition. We might even press some.

I expect our scoring to be up, and I expect other teams to be able to score on us some too. I did not expect us to make the other team work really hard to get a good shot off. We should be better here than last year, but nothing special.

Sadiq is the one guy who could really make a difference on defense and I think he,is going to impact some games in a major way but he is a frosh and is going to do frosh things. I worry about him getting in foul trouble a lot. He is so crazy aggressive playing defense.

I think Souare is going to be a plus defender for us. From what I saw in practice, I think Freeman made a big leap in defense over the summer and will be a plus defender. Kyle, George, Betsey, Kingz and Fennell should be average type defenders. I am hoping JJ can up his defense to that level.

Didn’t see Kiyan practice but I watched a bunch of his HS and summer games and ex-etc him to really struggle on defense. He wasn’t interested in defending then and he doesn’t look physically capable of being a plus defender at the college level right now. Sometimes there’s a big change when guys jump to the college level. Maybe that will happen with Anthony. I hope so. If anyone is going to do it, it will be him.

What does all this mean? I think we’re going to score triple figures two or three games this year.

That all makes sense but I’m unusually and delusionally optimistic about this team’s defense. Between Kline recognizing the need for the upgrade, the actual physical makeup of the roster, Red’s recognition of the abject failures of the past, the intensity on D in those practice clips, and the new S&C energy and commitment… there has to be a significant jump in performance. Has to be. As you said, we don’t have to be top percentile, just average, and I think we can be better than average. If not, that will be a sure and final indicator that Red can’t find and teach and instill it.

I think Sadig is going to make us a good defensive team. He loves that part of the game, and seeing a freshman so engaged will make the other players work harder on defense.

George had a horrendous defensive rating as a freshman but it improved to a passable level as a sophomore (116 to 107). JJ has had a bad defensive rating that has unfortunately remained roughly the same for his 3 years and regressed last year (113 to 111 to almost 114). These are not the end all be all, and perhaps the horrible defense for the team as a whole last year skewed the stats, but we should not be too surprised to see another rough defensive year for JJ. Our best bet on that end is that George continues to improve and other guards who are better at defense are able to push for time and slightly limit JJs minutes.

being able to see practice is a huge advanatge to prognostications...i agree with a lot of what youve said...the defense has been horrific under red (and the last years of JB - opponents score easily SU scores with diffulty, mostly) and that will set the ceiling for this team

would just add that bad defense probably makes it more likely to score over 100 in my mind...up tempo run and gun games wher you have to keep scoring

only caveat with that is if you force the team to put max effort on defense to compensate (like last year) then they might not have the gas to score 100 on the other end

scoring 100 is really hard...

im just lloking at the fact that reds teams have done it a few times per season already, theres more cupcakes than ever and this will,be his best team by far (hopefully) so gonna go with 4

I agree that defense may make or break this season. But how did Freeman make a big leap this summer? Because he said at media day that he knows he needs to be better at it? And it’s not that Kiyan isn’t interested in defending, he is slow footed. He tries to play defense, foot speed just a bit slow right now.
