What is the difference in revenue between a 3-9 SU football team and a 4-8, 5-7, ... SU team? How much additional revenue would a win bring into the athletic department? Syracuse's football reputation is completely shot so any future moves will only be about the money and not the pride of having a good football team (especially with the new chancellor). See the Nike uniforms as evidence of this mentality.
If you assume tickets increase as wins increase, there is some additional revenue. Maybe in extreme situations of 42,000 and 32,000 average tickets sold x 6 home games would be 60,000 additional tickets. Maybe these tickets are sold at an average of $30? That's 1.8 million a year plus other stuff (concessions?) so maybe about 2 million more a year between the best and worst case scenarios.
Where else would SUAD revenue increase if the team has more wins/plays better/more entertaining? A bowl game, but the max for SU is about 2 million (the Texas Bowl was 1.7 million last year).
My point: the additional revenue from additional wins is just not worth the trouble or the investment; they make plenty of money in other areas to worry about fielding a really good football team. And if Shafer is as good a dude as some say, that could be worth a lot to the university, more than another half-million in profit.
Realistically, it would take a huge effort to even compete within the ACC regularly. This means Scott Shafer/cheap coachng staff for probably a few more years (he did go to bowl game) and lower-middle of the ACC. I assume that this is the university's thoughts because otherwise, they would be doing more to increase the revenue, right?
I have no any knowledge of the financial details of SUAD or the football program so my assumptions could be way off. Anyone that does know, please fill in the holes.
