How the Celts viewed Fab Melo

I'll never understand the NBA. They knew Melo was a project from the start yet they drafted him and gave him all that money. Silly.
Yes, the idea that you would use a first round pick on a "project" and then give up on him before a year of development seems odd.

One can speculate that they didn't see the kind of work ethic from Fab that a "project" needs to become an NBA player.

Another example of why they need a true minor league system in the NBA. A lot of project players are released because they are too expensive to keep. They need to work with the players union to lower rookie contracts, this will allow teams to really develop their players and not rush it.

I think Fab was a real rarity though; most first rounders aren't cut within their first 2 years. The teams don't even save the money, the contracts are guaranteed.

Will this be the only NBA highlight video for Fab Melo? I know what happened in Syracuse leaves a sour taste in peoples mouths, but I can't help but root for the guy, I really enjoyed the games he did play in his sophomore year.

Probably.

I think most of us knew him for what he was: a good defensive COLLEGE center who lacked the strength, offense and skills to make it in the NBA without A LOT of work.
Unfortunately, he seems to lack the work ethic.

Yeah, I concur with this. Players are usually trying to go as high as possible so you're prolly seeing Fab at his best. Project or not, if he comes in after the draft and doesn't show the work ethic, or character to be developed cutting ties probably isn't that hard of a decision. Regardless of what you saw him as coming in.

If that's the case, then it doesn't say much about Boston's scouting and player development expertise, and they squandered significant guaranteed money on Fab.

And I believe one year is hardly enough time to develop (and pass judgment on) a young, raw big man talent such as Fab or anyone else in whom you have invested big dollars.
