New league - Salt City Athletic Conference - groups 16 largest public schools

A new high school sports conference in Central New York will change the competitive landscape for the largest schools in Section III.

The 16-team Salt City Athletic Conference will take the place of the 10-year old Central New York Counties League and pull in large-school teams from the Onondaga High School League's Freedom Conference.

The new league, which will start play in the fall season, includes teams from Class AA and Class A - the state's largest classifications.

The league does not include any private schools, including Christian Brothers Academy, Bishop Ludden, Bishop Grimes or charter school Syracuse Academy of Science, which have played in the Freedom Conference in some sports, especially basketball.

The new conference includes two divisions - Metro for the largest schools and Empire for the smaller ones.

Here's the lineup:

Metro Conference

Baldwinsville, Cicero-North Syracuse, Corcoran, Fayetteville-Manlius, Henninger, Liverpool, Nottingham and West Genesee

Empire Conference

Auburn, Central Square, Cortland, East Syracuse-Minoa, Fowler, Fulton, Jamesville-Dewitt and Oswego
