How will Syracuse try to avoid fan pileup that occurred at Clemson game?

all kidding aside, I was in that mess with my kid and it was really scary -- like so scary I was planning on how to get my kid onto the concession stand counters if people started pushing a little. And it is shocking that the SU Facilities folks admitted that they were not even aware of the issue until they were asked for comment after the fact. It was a solid 20 minutes or more of not being able to move an inch and barely being able to breathe. Things didn't let up until a woman from the fire department climbed up on the concession stand and started directing traffic (which was a few minutes after kick-off). Not something I ever want to experience again.

and here we go. Let’s sterilize football attendance at the dome. Now we will have an over reaction like everything else in this day and age.

While I've always wished that we'd expand the bowl of the dome, I know its not happening as part of this renovation, That said, I'd love if, as part of the renovation, once the air pressure issue is no longer a factor, they could create a secured, open area breezeway on the side of the Dome between Steele and the Law School. Not huge, but maybe 30-40 feet...effectively an open external area that people can access during the games, and can be used for foot traffic as well. Some of the drink and beer stands that are in the narrow concourses could also be moved out there very easily. Some ballparks have a setup like this and it encourages people out of the main foot traffic routes.

It would definitely need some investment to create a secured area however as it would be an extension of the concourse, not an entry point.

Did you even bother to read the article? What in there suggests an over reaction and sterilizing attendance?

“Maybe we look at how we operate the corner of the building at N and P, and maybe we reduce the time the concession stand is open before the game to allow for a better flow of people,”

I mean, truly chilling.

Just don't get it. They see that mandated entry points could be a solution but they are not going to mandate it. Too many people enter via the quad facing gates and walk half way around the Dome to get to their seats. Seems like a much better approch than shutting down a concession stand for 15 minutes.

This happened nearly 2 weeks ago and they are just getting to this article? That set of circumstances will never happen again so the article is idiotic. That said SU has kicked the can on this issue for a long time and I don't expect it to stop now. The school officials saying they were not aware of the problem is akin to Dino saying they didn't have film. I repeat - the only thing the department does well is payment for tickets.

Anyone that tries to dismiss what happened as 'not a big deal' should have their head examined. I'll also wager that they weren't one of those who were trapped in that situation. Operations staff should have a mitigation plan. Instead we get Mr Sala saying we sell out once a decade so why bother. They said the same thing with the Titanic, we don't need the lifeboats because it won't happen. But the reality is those concourses are so tight that it's a safety issue for smaller crowds as well, as in every weekend ACC home game.

This NEEDS to happen at a minimum. The most cost effective and functional solution if not the prettiest. If phase 3 tries to open up the exterior of the dome so that it sheds the fortress image, then maybe we can get our cake and eat it, too.

...In a castle dark, or a fortress strong, with chains upon my feet... :)

I believe the Titanic only sold out once.

Sala was in all day meetings on the Monday after the Clemson game. There was a sense of urgency to address. Based solely on the article I can't say I'm impressed with the solution or lack thereof but I wouldn't assume that the scenario was ignored or rationalized.

you could post 2-3 cops a that spot and try to get a handle on the crowd.. keep people out of that gate if congestion happens again, send people the long way around if need be..

That doesn't address the halftime crowds. We need armed guards telling people that they can't go to the bathroom for 15 minutes, or provide some litter boxes and give us another option.

once people are in why is one corner any busier than any other.. if anything that corner is less crowded since the other corner has all the students milling around.

They knew. This happens anytime there are large crowds - even for basketball. This is not a surprise to anyone who works there.

It's no big deal to walk around the outside of the dome to get to a certain gait when the weather is nice. But when it's freezing and wind is whipping on top of the hill in late November, I can see why people would want to enter wherever is closest to where they're coming from. Shutting down a few concession stands for 15 minutes isn't a big deal.
