The 475K was a settlement for the 1.1 million Rice was owed on the remainder of his contract. Not sure where you are getting "hush" money from.

Well I don't think he should have gotten anything. This wasn't a borderline firing and he wasn't "owed" anything. Rutgers is a bunch of pusses as usual.

Didn't he have a contract? Cost of a lawsuit would have been more than the buyout. Cut your losses and move on.

jgeorge, basketball coaches have long term contracts. If he is under contract there are buy out clauses, fairly common. Cost of law suits (time, aggravation, cost, negative publicity) in our society is unfortunately not worth pursuing legal action in some situations. It does suck that he leaves with $$ that is taxpayer money $$ but that's how our society works. You can try to get your pound of flesh but is it worth it. The released video tape does all the damage to his career that is needed. Rice is relegated to coaching girls AAU basketball. That says it all...
