I’m curious about number 44

Never saw Ernie (or Jim Brown in an SU uniform).

Joyce?

I saw Davis and Little play. Davis was an away game at Penn State. I saw Little play at both Archbold and at Penn State. I did not see Brown when he played for Syracuse, but I did see him in person when he played for Cleveland.

I was a freshman cheerleader in 1972. We were allowed to cheer at the Army game (we won) in Archbold Stadium while Schwartzwalder was still coach. Roger Praetorius was the only recognizable name on that team. I specifically remember the Army cadets wandering the halls of the dormitories looking for parties.

I first followed football in 1961, mainly focused on Jim brown at Cleveland, I was 8 years old that fall and my dad told me that SU had another guy who might turn out to be as good as Jim named Ernie Davis. SU was rarely on TV in those days but we were able to watch the Liberty Bowl, which turned out to be Ernie's last game:

I finally got my Dad to take me to a game and it was a 39-0 crushing of an undefeated UCLA team in the snow at Archbold in 1964. Later we watched SU play LSU in the Sugar Bowl:

And Tennessee in the 1966 Gator Bowl:

At my age...

Glen Moore

Michael Owens

Terry Richardson

Rob Konrad

Michael Owens was the first one I remember. The number then went back into circulation for awhile -- as you mention, Terry Richardson [who was a big time recruit] got it shortly thereafter, although he didn't live up to the hype. Then it went to Rob Konrad -- who did live up to the hype, and went on to be a high draft pick / NFL starter.

Would like to see us get it back into an on-field tradition, and as a recruiting tool. Seems like a waste to not use it.

Interesting thanks. I was twelve in 1959. I watched the SU vs Texas Cotton Bowl game on TV. The next year at age thirteen I walked to Archbold from Syracuse's "Nort" side to watch every home game. I did the same to watch Floyd Little. My family never owned a car until I was older. So I had no choice other than to walk to games. I had been watching Jim Brown with Clevland in prior years because my father was a fan of his. Back then, Clevland games were on that black & white tv every Sunday cause Jim Brown was a great attraction in sports.

Who was as lucky as I have been to have watched Ernie Davis and Floyd Little play at old Archbold? I also grew up watching Jim Brown play with the Cleveland Browns.
Not me, but my dad did. He said he and his friends used to hitch hike in from Skaneateles to see Brown play. They were old enough to drive when Ernie played.

We did have it good Steve we got to watch a lot of good teams during our time as fans of Syracuse Sports teams. Including great wrestlers like Nance, Mills, great lacrosse teams, and rowing during the Regatta on Onondaga Lake.
I was able to watch the Nats at the War Memorial.
