I AM NEXT (Fran Brown Episode)

I get some people’s hesitancy in an extension so soon, but honestly, who is going to come here in the modern NIL age of college sports and help Syracuse university and the football program more than Fran has? I’m sure maybe SOMEONE could, but I’m not holding my breath. Fran Brown has checked most of the boxes already, only into year 2

He is the main reason we have a chance. Without him our NIL funds dry up.
His ability in fundraising and recruiting makes him special in an era where that is a majority of what makes a team successful. His energy and attention to detail in managing a program seems worlds better than what we had previously. It's shocking how short his learning curve seemed to be considering he was a POSITION coach before coming to Syracuse.

I am not entirely sold on in game coaching, which would be my hold up on a massive extension. Nixon has done a great job with the offense, but the defense, even with the apparent talent upgrade, hasn't been good.

Still, the team improved through the year last year faster than our rivals, and we had a great first season. Sometimes, taking a big bet early saves you a lot of money in the long run...

Reports are that Fran Brown is paid $4million a season right now. Would he take a 10 year, $55 million contract right now (with an insane buyout or other poison pills to actually lock him down at Syracuse), full knowing he might be offered a 6/$60 million next offseason from an SEC team if he can keep this ball rolling? Financial security and generational wealth are hard to turn down, but that's a big delta if he decides to roll the dice and wins...

I’m open to locking him in with an enormous buyout. I would shoot for 5-6 years in term. The sell is that he’ll be eligible for an earlier extension and gives the university more flexibility.

There is no doubt in my mind that Fran Brown will win the natty or even multiple as a head coach. We need to do everything in our power to make sure it happens in Syracuse!

Football coaches don't have short careers like players. Fran Brown is 43 years old. If he took my hypothetical 10 year deal, essentially an 8 year extension and 37% pay increase, he will still have 20 years to pursue other big contracts if he decides to leave Syracuse. There are at least 15 head coaches in their 60's right now, and some in their 70's. I have a very strong feeling Brown is going to be one of those guys who ages enviably well. He isn't really taking a big risk by taking a long extension with Syracuse.

In contrast, Juan Soto at 26 years old absolutely had to shoot for the moon... If he signed a 10 year contract, he will likely never get another big contract.

Athletes age poorly, coaches don't have the same time restrictions.

Fran said when he took the job he is done coaching in 9 years...or something like that. to cooincide with his youngest child starting sports. So lock him up for that timeframe.

It was his youngest daughter being in HS / teenager and it was ten years. He said he wants to be home for her. I suspect that comment comes a lot from his own childhood situation and protecting her. But he doesn’t strike me as a guy who ever stops working either. Then again who knows.

My only hesitancy may be his loyalty to ERob. The entire staff collectively matters just as much as the head man.

The irony there is most teenagers want some distance from their parents.

I always took it as “I need to be the dad with a gun protecting her from guys” type of line. But I’m reading into the fact that he was born to a single mom who was a teenager when he was born. I really doubt he only coaches till he’s in his late 40s.
