Tyler Lydon is not Dion Waiters. Dion Waiters is not Tyler Lydon.

Having a good player that at one time came off the bench in no way, shape or form is equivalent to the role Dion Waiters once played and was successful in.

We're not doing this. This is not going to become another situation where every center we recruited that wasn't a burger boy is automatically compared to Seann Williams.

As arbiter of the appropriate use of players comparisons, I hereby defenestrate the comparison of Dion Waiters to any player that comes off the bench or may come off the bench.

So it is, and may God have mercy on you poor fools.

Hes not Dion, but face it, someone is going to have to take one for the team and be first off the bench. We have 6-8 guys more than capable of starting

Your post is like listening to a Rage Against the Machine song. I have no idea what you are talking about but I like that you are fighting back.

In my mind it's a people issue. Lydon is going to come off the bench because White or Roberson would be bent about it. Lydon has the mentality it makes no difference if he comes off the bench. He's going to bring it every game no matter what. That's why he's one of our favorite players. Maybe all-time favorites before his career is over.

Wish Gillon wasn't a 5th year. Could be a great spark plug 6th man who could take serious minutes. Like Dion.

I think Gillon and Howard will split minutes about equally.

Agreed but Howard will take start chipping away more come March. Say what you will about experience (not personally digging at you, just speaking in general) but March experience is of incredible importance and Howard has more.

Ok - Lydon is the next KrisJo or Scoop then.
Happy now?

PS - did you know Scoop and Dion are cousins? :p

PPS - when Lydon comes off the bench, and then becomes a lottery pick, which former SU player should we compare him to? ;)

I'm guessing it's the new guy. Boeheim is very loyal to his players.

I think the biggest factor in Frank's favor will be the extent to which people play zone against us. I think before Andrew White, there was a much greater possibility of that happening. I look at Battle and Gillon as PGs who have to be running the floor to be most effective. Sure, they can both shoot and pass, but what they both do best is drive.

Frank is probably our best pure PG in terms of running a half court offense, especially against a zone, because zone cuts off driving lanes for guys like Battle and Gillon.

I can see Frank also being an indispensable player against the press. He could definitely play 20 minutes vs. Louisville.

I don't really get the post. Mystery player 'X' coming off the bench, assuming he is a guard and volume scorer, will especially be branded the Dion Waiters role or will be compared to Dion. This would not bother me even if it is Lydon.

I haven't really seen centers who aren't Burger Boy/stud recruits being compared to Sean Williams on here. That would be an insult to the recruit. ;)

4 years > 1 year
14 PPG > 2 PPG
That is the experience that matters most, not a handful of games last March in which Frank was still a little used sub.

That's how you sell it to White, not Lydon. Lydon has already been a starter on this team, and he is projected as a first round pick. You don't bench that guy.

One of the funniest things, easily best Dave analogy of all time. Laughed so hard I was in tears. Thank you.

JB isn't going to give two hoots in hell once the season starts as to who is going to get their feelings hurt by being the "6th man sparkplug off the bench" I doubt very seriously that he is party to making pre -season/ pre-commitment guarantees about both starting and playing time. I would guess that his narrative to players might be something akin to "We have pursued or recruited you because we believe you can be an important member of the team and believe in your abilities. If you come in and play well you will get plenty of play but in the end we play those players who give us the best chance to win a game PERIOD.

Outside of the phenomenon of JB giving "token starts" to players who are then subbed for at the 1st timeout, there is no substantive evidence that JB issues playing time or starting guarantees and would be crazy to do so. He's a HOF coach for God's sake and he's not going to get his chain pulled by some kid. Does anyone really think that JB ever coddles to ANYONE? That concept is nothing short of laughable. Once a coach lets the whims and desires of individual players affect his decision making they lose any credibility they have with the other players and the team as a whole. JB is likely the last coach on the entire planet who would do such a thing.

I don't know how to make it much clearer. I'm tired of people using Dion Waiters as a justification to not start Lydon.

So I defenestrated that crap.
I think the best justification not to start Lydon is that White and Gillon didn't come here to come off the bench.

Is that true? Who knows? But I think it is just as likely Lydon comes off the bench as starts. Because right now, I don't think JB knows.
