Right now we have 7 FBS openings: USC, Miami, Maryland, South Carolina, Illinois, North Texas & UCF and that doesn't include potentially Virginia, Virginia Tech, and Rutgers.

We aren't going to get a good candidate this year. Thus, while their is a lot of pent up frustration there is no need discussing SS's termination as he will be the HC of SU next year.

I know you guys think I want Shafer gone, I really don't, but just trying to look at this objectively. The truth is, I think Coyle gives him another year UNLESS we absolutely get waxed by FSU and Clemson and don't win another game. Then I think he gets the boot.

We aren't making a change with all these plum openings. The talent pool for coaches is going to be thin.We need to try and scoop up talented assistants this year if we can.

I am frustrated but with these openings SS is going to be safe unless it becomes really bad and I don't want to see that.

It didn't seem like so many had opened already even though I knew about all of these. I've always been surprised Illinois hasn't figured out how to sustain success. Seems like it would be a pretty solid job with good recruiting areas.

"Nobody wants to come here" has been said enough and people have heard it enough that they believe it to be true.

I think somebody good would absolutely want to come here. If not, the ACC and IPF are worth nothing.

I am not saying nobody wants to come here. I don't want a 2nd tier candidate. The top candidates are going to want these better jobs. I want Syracuse to be one of the few P5 jobs available.

Another angle: make the move and compete with the big boys for a top coaching talent. Send a message to the college football community that SU's era of not investing in its program is over.

Can't worry about that. We're probably not going head to head vs USC/Miami/South Carolina for coaches anyway.

There is going to be openings every year, it really is no different then previous years. Without comparing jobs to one another, these are the P5 job openings over the past couple years...

2014- Florida, Michigan, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Pitt, Kansas, Oregon St.

2013- Penn St, Texas, USC, Washington, Vanderbilt, Louisville, Wake,

2012- Arizona, Arizona st, , Arkansa, Illinois, Kansas, Washington St, UCLA, Texas A&M, Rutgers, Pitt, Penn St, Ohio St, North Carolina, Ole Miss, Arkansa, Wisconsin

2011- Florida, Arkansa, Indiana, Maryland, Miami, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, Ohio State, Pittsburg, Stanford, Vanderbilt, West Virginia.

The bottom line is their will always be teams competing for the top candidates, I mean look how often some of the top programs in the country are in this list. Wisconsin x 3, Penn St x 3, Florida x 3, USC x 3 counting this upcoming year.

There are always going to be several openings. Next year will be no different.

After next year our angst is going to be keeping shafer

If we become good enough for another team to want Scott Shafer that would be fine and let him move on as that would mean we won a lot of games.

I don't care if he is here long term I just want to win games.

The ACC/PF and IPF are worth something. A salary offer in the $2-3 million range instead of the $1-1.5 million range would mean even more. Better money for assistants will mean more still. Until Syracuse takes care of #3 and #4 the word on Syracuse will continue to be that we're not serious about football and this job isn't particularly desirable.

That said, HCSS will get at least one more year and I'm pulling for him to show dramatic improvement in 2016.

I wouldn't look at the opening vs the openings around the country. We should look for regional candidates vs national ones. That's why I always trumpet the Patricias aka guys who like CNY and are from there.

As I said in another thread, my mind has changed after that Pitt game. I sense something happening and the move Coyle HAS to force on the football program is a new point of view. Always good to have a competing voice to question the status quo. It would be good for Scott for sure. It may be a guy who gets let go and wants to be in the game still. Maybe Al Golden would come in and be a coordinator for a few years to build up good will. Again. Not saying it's him but someone like that who is damaged goods but could offer a different set of eyes vs Shafer's MAC cabal.

There are a ton of options out there, if they needed or wanted to make a change, they will. There are good coaches that people aren't even discussing

if you don't want to make a change but feel like you're forced to, all this turnover can be your excuse for waiting.

Agree with you and your stance here and what you are saying, just 1 thing does throw a monkey wrench into this possibly. Coyle could maybe make one phone call and have the Boise Coach Bryan Harisn be the next coach at Syracuse. Maybe because of Coyle's ties to Boise we can get him and have no competition at all for him. (of course taking into consideration Harsin wants to come here and take this job.)

So while there are other openings and all are probably much better than ours, Coyle could have the inside track for someone like Harsin and we could maybe land him very easily. Just something to think about.

do we know that harsin is actually good? team is loaded with petersen recruits beating up on terrible schools like hawaii and virginia. (wait, what?)

multiple, running, TE's up the wazzoo. i think there are easier ways to do it

i just have my doubts about boise state coaches. petersen isn't setting the world on fire at UW.

Harsin is a Boise Alum I have a hard time believing he would his alma mater for Syracuse.

Boise State has a strong community and while they have lost their magic from Peterson they won a NYS Bowl last year and will be contenders most years.

Sadly the football standards from our fanbase have become so low that we will see the same crap next year but just hope the talent bails out the coaching.

Boise is a really nice place to live and he has strong ties to the community as well. Tough place to leave, probably why Petersen stayed so long as well, may be kicking himself for leaving at this point as well. The way UW fires coaches he could be available after 2016 as well, that is food for thought

i'm convinced boise state practices 90 hours a week and no one from the ncaa knows how to get to idaho to check on them.

I can't wait for all the pom poms when we win 6 games next year and make a bowl.
