Apologies if there is already a thread for this, but I like what Syracuse is doing so far in the portal. Seems to be an emphasis on accomplished lower division types. These guys may not be former SEC 4 stars, but they might be hungry to prove themselves.

I like the emphasis on D line.

The QB looks promising.

The RB as well.

Just need some OL.

Frans doing the right things so far, IMO.

Toossiis backups at WR will provide much needed depth.

I don’t think we’ve improved that much. Some nice gets, but nobody i would qualify as a high impact transfer. Maybe one of the better gets, Odom, is projected to be a back up. For reference we’re rated #53 in portal team rankings and 11th in the ACC. Not the splash i was hoping for with so many holes to fill on a roster that needed it.

Fair enough.
We won't know until mid season.
One thing I do like is that he's trying something different. Instead of swapping spit, he's giving a chance to kids who proved themselves, albeit on a lower level.
We cannot outbid SEC teams. We got SEC 4 stars last time & they didn't produce. so why not try this?

We'll see.

Staff is very happy with the kids they have landed. Lots of competition for each of them including our new 6 4 CB. Everyone is thrilled with the QB. D is much improved, and the O looks to have improved the RB position. Other than Gill it doesn't look like we missed much. This week should be interesting with hopefully a couple of nice surprises.

Unless you’re writing a big check, kinda hard for a team with a lot of holes that doesn’t have phat cash to buy the highest rated guys. I think On3 has us ranked 34th right now(?).

Per Chris Carlson this morning, On3 has SU currently ranked at #33, and #6 in the ACC. On3 rankings measures the impact of a team's losses and its additions. There will be movement in those numbers as teams continue to add (Miami for example).

Michael Smith (TE S. Car) is SU's highest rated portal addition (#298).

Looks like a lot of SU's $$$ went to the QB room and player retention.

Linebacker is a need? We got a transfer for pass coverage with Gary Bryant and AD back and tremble will either play backer or edge.

We only need 3 linebackers?

You must have missed AD barely being able to walk towards the end of the season.

On the LB note, are we playing the 4-2-5 again? Kehres was an LB coach. If we’re playing a 4-3-4 or 3-3-5 we definitely need LBs still.

But yes on the OP. I am very happy with the portal additions especially at TE and QB.

Speaking of nice surprises, I’m still hoping that our Miami crew can entice Malachi Toney to join them here.

To re-iterate some of the comments on the Indiana thread - Cignetti stated that he values production over potential when it comes to the transfer portal. Indiana only has eight 4 & 5 stars total on their roster this year. Sounds like Fran & Co are trying to do the same this year.

Indiana probably has a lot more money to throw around than we do. I just took a look at their On3 transfer rankings (they are ranked 5th). Two 4 stars (TCU QB & Mich St WR) and a bunch of 3 stars. The difference is that the vast majority of their transfers come from other P4 schools. So you know they produced against good competition. Transfers from non-P4 schools are mainly a wait and see - can they compete at a higher level.

I hope there are a few players who can be true team leaders in that haul.

Counting from OX's roster post, we have 94 players right now (can have up to 105). 24 of them are in their 4th or 5th year. Leaving 70 who are in year 1 thru 3.

More concerning is that of 35 line of scrimmage players, only 10 are in Year 4 or 5.

That's a really young team. I'd say that sets up well for the future, but in today's insta-transfer world, it really means nothing.

Our run of a really good team every 6 years always has a lot of impact seniors.

EDIT: Updated the #'s with the new UNLV guy.

It also helps that he has a lot of guys on his defense who came with him from JMU. There's more continuity there than folks realize.

I like it but to love it we need a 3 shade stud, a safety to help solidify back half, and 1 receiver. Ideally we keep Gill but as I have heard there is other stuff involved there. Still preying he comes back cause he would be a clear 1 and help young guys in learning system. It would be instrumental in their development.
