Obviously losing stinks and we lost, but I think that I can finally see a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel.

In my honest opinion, we didn't lose because we were outgunned or out coached. We lost because has had a year to workout their system, whereas we just started implementing our system. If you break the game down into offense, defense, and special teams and analyze each of them individually, I think that there are a lot of positives.

* I think that most people would say that our offense looked the worst on Saturday and that's probably true. However, it is important to remember two things: PSU is a very good defensive team and we have a new HC, OC, QB, and WR's. Most teams aren't going to look good on offense when they play a school that is literally known a "Linebacker U." None the less, SU has some excellent chances that we were not about to cash in on because of miscommunication and lack of touch. Given how much is new with our system, I can live with that, as both of those problems will fix themselves as the year goes on. I've also heard that SU looked to vanilla on offense and tried in vain to run up the middle too many times. I agree with HCSS that we should open up the play book, but I don't fault anyone. It's early in the season, and EVERYONE is still learning the system. Under those conditions, opening game is far from the best place to show everyone the tricks up our sleeve. Furthermore, given that we have two backs that are capable of hitting 1,000 yard, a new QB, and WR's with new leadership roles, I can't fault any SU coach from wanting to establish a running presence.

Overall, I would give the unit a C+, but with some polish, that could easily turn into a B, or possibly a B+.

* Special teams was a little bit of a mixed bag. On one hand, we had trouble with some long snaps, we over-kicked coverage once, and we missed a FG. However, on the other hand, some of our coverage was excellent, and I thought that our return game was very good. I think that over-kicking coverage was a result of excitement from the game/location, the missed FG wasn't a give-me, and the long snap is something fixable. I think that there are some serious problems that need to be addressed, but all of the issues that I see are very fixable.

Overall, I would give the unit a B- with the possibility of improving to a B+.

* I thought that our defense was excellent. Sure we gave up some runs early in the game and some big throws early in the second half, but we eventually shut down the run and our secondary held their own and even made some magnificent plays to keep us in the game. It's also worth noting that we were going up against a big offensive line, the #1 freshman QB in the nation, and the #1 WR in the B1G. PSU is a surprisingly dangerous team when they are on offense, and we made them look mediocre, which is a HUGE win.

Overall, I would give the unit a B+ (but close to an A-) with the possibility of improving to a solid A once we figure out how to get more pressure on the QB.

Combined, I would give SU a B/B- ranking, but note that we didn't look particularly polished. In my mind, that isn't bad. It means that we have a lot of work to do, but the work is very doable, which is a good thing.

Given that out of the 3 areas of the game, our defense changed the least and performed the best, I think that our team has a high ceiling. Once the kinks get worked out of our special teams play and once our offense has a chance to settle into a system and gel like our defense has, we could very well field a solid ball team. If our recruiting picks back up (it seems to be in a lull), we could very well be ranked by the end of next year. In fact, although I doubt we will be ranked this season, I actually wouldn't be surprised if we were performing at a top 20-25 level by the end of this year.

GO ORANGE AND BEAT NORTHWESTERN!

Agree, we've had far worse starting points. I felt far far worse after Minnesota last year.

I walked away feeling numb. I wasn't overwhelmingly disappointed but add it to the ever growing list of opening games we could/should have won (PSU 2013, NW 2012, and Minnesota 2009). Perhaps we should play our cupcake in week 1 to get things sorted or at least stop scheduling B1G teams in the first week?

Assuming this game was not us at our best, we're going to really feel bad about letting this one slip away. PSU is undermanned. They're going to be a punching bag by the time November rolls around. We held them in check - except for three mistakes in the secondary. But our offense didn't take control in the fourth quarter and we let them win with mediocrity.

Or, they pulled out a close game with talented receivers who made big plays, and a good DL that bottled up the run game that is the key to our success. It wasn't mediocrity that beat us.

The moment Marrone left for Buffalo, this game went from a favorite to an underdog. What they do week to week and even year to year will say alot about what we have with this staff. Right now it is way too early to label this team or this staff.

I agree with that. Unfortunately, their lack of depth isn't an issue yet. The same thing happened with USC last year.

After watching the replay on BTN last night I am very disappointed with the game.

Reasons in no particular order: (1) Reddish should have taken the fumble to the house - he failed to allow his blockers to push No. 77 out of the way - a lost TD; (2) Lynch dropping the pick six INT - another lost TD; (3) the Krautman FG miss - would have tied the game - ugh!!; (4) so many dropped passes - Gulley and Estime in the flat; (5) the Jerome Smith fumble with SU in very good field position- ugh!; (6) some poor passes by Allen - too much mustard on too many completable passes; and (7) the awful last three offensive series - open receivers not even noticed by Allen - really frustrating.

We should have won this game.

you do not get to the offense until point 4, and what is with hating on reddish for making an amazing strip on one of the top receivers in the land at a crucial time because he didn't take it back 70 yards or whatever it was? the offense has to finish that drive regardless.

there is no good feeling after this game. the offense was atrocious. that is all there is to talk about. the loss is a lot less concerning to me than the offense product put on the field. i only hope it was an anomaly. i felt a lot better after NW last year.

First, I prefaced the comments by making clear that they were in no particular order.

Second, I was not "hating on" Reddish. I was expressing frustration that after making a great play, he failed to take advantage of the army of Orange that could have escorted him into the endzone - he essentially ran into the PSU offensive tackle.

Third, nearly every point addressed the offense and yes we need to score touchdowns.

only 3/6 points addressed the offense. you are correct concerning the order. i misread that. i don't understand the frustration with reddish at all. it's so misplaced.

Broyld, is that you?

We lost by 6 to Penn State. We had a chance to win with 2 minutes left. Our D forced 4 TO's. Our questionable DE's came through (ACC D linemen of the week!). Our return game looked dynamic. Allen has a cannon for an arm. There were very few holes - and yet Jerome is a freaking bus and did what he does. Reddish stripped the ball from their best player, picked it up and ran it for a 40 yard return. The players love playing for SS. Penn State was held to 1 1st down on 3rd down. Their running game looked awful compared to ours. Our marquee OOC game the last 2 years was a blow out - we held our own in this game and looked like we belonged.

Glass half-full. It's all how you look at it.

i agree D looked good but i feel our defense was solid a bunch of years when we had 4-8 records. i think our main problem in the past decade was our inability to put pts on the board. i was hoping we would trend upwards after last year.

honest question, did you feel better after nw last year or penn st this year?

About the same: Clean some things up, we win.

Just a PSU viewpoint here:

1 - PSU can point to a lot of missed opportunities, as well. For example:
- Fergusen dropping the ball on his 2nd passing attempt when PSU had just had a nice gain.
- The Robinson fumble after a really nice throw and 3rd down conversion deep into 'Cuse territory.
- Hackenberg's first INT thrown in 'Cuse territory.

2 - If you go to a PSU board, you'll see the frustration with the playcalling in the 4th quarter (a lot of Zwinak runs up the middle against 8 guys in the box).

3 - All-in-all, a good game, and it looks like both teams have a good base to work from with some easily correctable mistakes.

Good luck the rest of the year.

OMG - Are we really debating this?

Jerome Smith fumble, dropped passes, poorly thrown passes, blown offensive series at the end - and you could even include Krautman's FG miss.

lol those are special teams

it was a misguided post by me. i am a bit sick of people bringing up the reddish play. i am also frustrated immensely by what i saw on offense. im paranoid im going to see another 10 years like the robinson era.

ill be at nw this weekend so hopefully they can turn it around.
