Not because I wanted to avoid OT. I was thinking either:

- we’d get the PAT blocked considering the last 2 kicks were a disaster and near-disaster … and

- I wasn’t confident the D could hold them for 29 seconds

It’s unreal what goes through your mind as a fan sometimes. And I now just realize what I posted makes no sense… except for the PAT part.

In the past I heard (or read) that the convention is to go for the W (2 pt. conversion) on the road, and play for OT at home. I don't know if modern metrics still supports this though.

Regardless (and as I posted elsewhere), part of me wanted to see the TE throwback.

I think they thought they could bust one on the first down hand off and when it was shutdown quickly they said that’s enough.It wouldn’t of shocked me if they got a 20-30 yard run on that 1st down play.

If you plug the variables into a solver the GTO play there was the extra point. The main variables being at home and McCord in a short field.

2 pt conversion you get one chance only. With ot you have multiple downs to score and win as long as you don't turn the ball over. I like our chances with this offense on a short field.

On the contrary had we made that PAT, VT would be forced to score with 29 seconds. With an ERob defense I’d say their odds of reaching FG range were at least 50-50.

The way I see it, if you’re the favored/better team you want to go to OT and extend the game as long as possible. If you’re the worse team/underdog, you want to shorten the game and get out of there with one play for the win. Since SU and VT are very evenly matched teams and we were at home, I preferred OT.

dont know if anyone else saw it but just prior to overtime coin flip, Fran instructed captain to select direction of to play toward va tech fan side of end zone. Some dude in a suit saw the instruction and came running in from sideline, like the 15 yard line too, and conferred with fran. Whatever he saw and said got Fran to play toward the band side. Fran went to center circle where captain were and changed instruction to the guys. smart move took va tech fans out of it for first possesion at least

I know, but that’s not how it started out. Now maybe there was some nuance if they won or lost toss But there was a clear direction change after the conference with the guy in suit.
