(at almost 12:30 in the morning, scanning my dilapidated sheet and the results)

The Big East is 11-4, (I'm including the play-in games) with four teams in the Sweet 16: Syracuse, Louisville, Marquette and Cincinnati, (all of whom have won this previously)

The Big 10 is 9-2 with four Sweet 16 teams, (Ohio State, Indiana, Michigan State, Wisconsin, ditto)

The Big 12 is 6-4 with two Sweet 16 teams, (Kansas, who has won it and Baylor who has not)

The ACC is 5-3 with two Sweet 16 teams, (North Carolina and NC State, who have both won it)

The SEC is 5-2 with two Sweet 16 teams, (Kentucky and Florida, both of whom have won it)

The Pac 12 is 1-2 and no Sweet 16 teams.

The other Sweet 16 teams are Xavier and Ohio U, who have never won it.

So 13 of the Sweet 16 are former champions. To an extent this will be a sort of Big East-Big 10 challenge with three games on tap in the Sweet 16: Michgian State-Lousiville, Syracuse- Wisconsin and Cincinnati- Ohio State.

The latter match-up is meaningful to us historians and to long-time fans of those schools. Back in the day the Buckeyes and the Bearcats met for the title in 1961 and 1962. Ohio State, who ahd won the 1960 championship, was #1 and favored on both occassions but Cicncinnati won both times.

FSU? I guess it's 12:30 where you are, too. ;) (But thanks for the correction)

Here is an article I wrote in 2006 about the history (or lack thereof) between the two schools, if you're interested...

Thanks. Great article. I wodner if you could compare that feud to thye one between Kentucky and Lousivlle, which was finally resolved to produce an annual series.

I think there's actually a ton of similarities in that. Major state school against a slightly smaller one from (originally) a non-major conference; lots of bitterness between the fanbases; pressure to schedule one another. The two situations are a lot alike. The only difference is that Ohio State has gone a lot longer without finally relenting to playing Cincinnati than Kentucky did with Louisville.

What is interesting is that the BE was supposed to be way down, certainly 3rd or 4th fiddle to the mighty, mighty Big 10. Nah...

That suggests to me that SU may be much better than is generally thought. Based on this past weekend's results, I, for one, am way more confident vs Wisconsin than I was before Kstate.

I'd be interested in knowing which sweet 16 team has the most wins against this years sweet sixteen teams?

Yes...I 'm too lazy to look it up and do the math.

In 1982, the year before they finally actually met in the tournament, the NCAA tried to pair Kentucky and Louisville by putting them in the same bracket. Kentucky was a #6 seed and had to play Middle Tennesse State and Louisville a #3 seed, got a bye. The Wildcats lost to MTS, 44-50 and we got Louisville vs. Middle Tennesse State isntead of Kentucky. There was alot of talk the Cats had lost on purpose so they didn't have to play Louisville. But they did meet the next year in the tournament and Louisville won at which point Kentucky relented and scheduled them.

The ESPN College Basketball Encyclopedia lists Kentucky as Louisville's "fiercest rival":
"Separated by 75 miles, Louisville and Kentucky divide the loyalties of many towns stright down the mdidle. As sportswriter Dave Kindred once described the Battle for the Bluegrass, 'Lousiville fans dismiss Kentucky zealots as insufferably arrogant dolts and Kentucky fans consider Louisville zealots hopelessly deluded elitists."

Lousiville is also listed as Kentucky's greatest rival. "Rupp refused to play lousiville again after losing to the Cardinals in the 1959 NCAA Tournament. When the teams were finally forced together in 1983 Elite 8, UL triumphed once more in an overtime classic. Since Pitino took the Cardinal's helm in 2001m things have gotten downright ugly. Once considered UK's savior, Pitino is now 'Benedict Rick' and is booed mercilessly in Rupp Arena. "

They could meet in the Final Four this year.
