If the chaos is the new normal

Because no other team has a guarantee so why should they? Of course they aren't going to be legally pressured to join a conference but with these kind of deals, that no other team is afforded, allows them to continue doing what they want independently. I hope teams like USC and others stop scheduling them - there's no need for them. Then, ND might have to run the table to warrant a top 12 ranking.
If you think of college football not as a sport, but as a cartel, then it helps. :)

I've always thought that once they expanded the playoff we'd end up seeing a lot of 2 and 3 loss teams win the title.

The undefeated/1-loss criteria was always simplistic and silly. There were always 2-3 loss teams that were better but played a tougher schedule or took longer to come together during the season.
Under the BCS system, I always hated that a loss early in the year was weighted the same as late in the year. It left little room for teams to be rewarded for improving which os stupid considering how much teams progress/regress during a season.

I know the committee doesn't always get it right, and there will always be debates over who was left out and let in, but I like the eye test component of the committee. Go to 16 teams and get rid of the byes, and we'll have the best system we could have.

You realize how the playoffs work, right? The top teams make it after the 5 autobids. Most of those - like 4 most years, and at least 3 all the time - are going to be top 12. So effectively the top 10 teams are “guaranteed” to get in. Notre Dame gets in if they are top 12 instead of top 10 and it’s the end of the friggin’ world? Please. This deal isn’t a nothingburger - but it’s really, really close to it.

I’ve argued that the ACC deal is good for Notre Dame since it locks in 6 games every year and scheduling 12 would be much more difficult. But the idea that all P4 schools are going to stop scheduling Notre Dame is absurd. I mean…USC has already said they want to reschedule the series - it’s entirely on Notre Dame to agree to play earlier in the year than they have historically. They probably need to have the ACC games later in the year with big nonconference games in September to mid-October - it’s part of why the deal with the ACC has benefits Notre Dame strategically avoids acknowledging. It locks in late season games that would be much harder to schedule while allowing ND to have big nonconference tilts early in the season just like everyone else.

The MOU with ND is also going to be irrelevant in a year when they expand the field to 16. It's gross but so is everything when dealing with ND.

I used to say that the ACC benefitted from their ND arrangement, but no longer. It's far more beneficial to ND and I'd love to see the ACC end it. They won't, of course, because the ACC is as strategic as a potted plant and strong as a wet tissue.

Respectfully disagree with you here. The college football season is extremely short -- it's not like say baseball where it's just a never ending grind. IMO a loss on Labor Day weekend should have the same exact value as a loss in late November.

Relax dude, you're way too animated to continue this discourse. I'm not alone so don't act like this is coming from left field. Moving on...

So teams don't get better throughout the year? It doesn't matter that they don't have a MLB like grind. College teams change a lot over the course of 3 months. I'll keep coming back to that 2000 Miami team. They lost a close game to what ended up being a 1 loss Washington team while breaking in a new sophomore QB. By the end of the year they were a well oiled machine that had beaten both teams that had played in the previous year's NC game, one of which ended up playing in that year's game. Everyone knew they were the best team by the end of the year.

You can look at a team like our 1992 team. We got drubbed by an average Ohio State team early in the year. P made adjustments and by the end of year we're taking Miami to the limit and beating a loaded Colorado in the Fiesta Bowl.

Can’t they at least get some protection? Look at how much the big 2 conferences control things. It’s not fair at all. The corrupt process played out in the open for all to see this year.

I guess it depends on who you ask. There's no right or wrong opinion on this but I think it's ridiculous that they essentially aren't being forced into a conference at this point, like every other team that has any playoff aspirations. They get to play by a different set of rules, which I don't care for (but that's just me).
