if we wan to talk purely the throws

If you can't block, you can't run. If you can't run, you can't pass. If you can't run or pass, you can't win.
The last really good Oline we had was 7 years ago. Since then we have had no NFL caliber offensive linemen and have had very average line talent. This is probably the main reason for our lack of consistent success.
TD is running for his life all game and the backs have no holes to run through.
The playbook for gaining yardage when the defense spends the afternoon on your side of the los had not yet been written.
We can win 8-10 games when average talent has a few years experience but that doesn't happen often.

Dino knows what he is doing and Devito will learn rapidly. We'll go bowling and build for the future.

To quote Oscar Gamble, “They don't think it be like it is, but it do.”
WSU never runs and throws well

Uh, they lead the conference in passing and while they don't run often they do it pretty well when they do.

Are you talking about SU or WSU?

FWIW I loved the way we looked the last two drives. Feel like we should be doing that the whole game...
How much of that was N.C. ST going into madden prevent mode?

I do wish there were a little more discussion about how terrible we run the ball

I feel like I've been doing my part.

And to beat the drum again, in the face of struggling to run between the tackles, we don't seem to even try using the sidelines. If the current RBs don't have the speed to get there, then let's see the freshman. Let's see Riley in motion, getting the ball as he comes across.

Even when we blocked well, it seemed like one defender would be the only person who could make the tackle for a minimal gain, and he always did.

3rd and long with defenses dropping 7-8 into coverage isn't going to help our passing game.

Our offensive approach puts our already distressed qb at a further disadvantage. We have three experience running backs with shake and we run them continuously up the middle.

Its a miracle Tommy didn’t throw any picks, or he’s doing his best to manage an already bad situation.

you cant run wide if your tackles cant block..

people act like we dont run this style offense like every other team does.

NC st ran the same QB toss plays we did 2 weeks ago and we failed and they gained 10..

they have 6 in the box all night and we cant run against it.. its pretty simple. until we can run a little teams wont honor the pass and make it hard to do anything we really want to do.. if you add in a QB that you really cant run now its even more limiting.

now if we want to abandon the run thats an option, but havnt we also shown we dont handle pressure well..

Heres a play book.. 80% of which you cant block and 20% better teams stop all day..

the stats already show we have the best throwing QB we have had in yrs and we cant score.

I would also like to see the jet sweep used more with Riley and Nykiem. Feels like we used it more last year for some reason, easy way to get those guys involved and give the running game a little more diversification.

Halfway thru the year, Nykeim has 12 catches for 31 yards, 0 rushes.

Seems like 82 is always on the field though.

It'd be interesting to see how many 1st downs the offense had through 3.5 quarters (prior to our TD drive), and what % of our passing yards came on our last 2 drives.

Ya think!!!!?

The running game went for 56 yds on 22 carries but everyone is focused on why TD sucks when he throws 78% for 300 yds, no ints, with no running game to help him.

300yds and 1 tds with no ints is what 9-10-11 win teams do.

56 yds on 22 carries is what 0-1 win teams do.

Ok, not for nothing but I see TD's stats being thrown up as some sort of panacea for his overall performance.
Yes, the O line is bad, and the WR's are not getting open, the run game is nonexistent, and the playcalling overall has been putrid. These are things that can and will get better, IMO.
But what I'm most concerned about w/ Devito is his lack of situational awareness. The dump-off throws to nowhere, the costly interceptions, the inability to see running lanes that Stevie Wonder would notice, the moxie and 'tude to wanna rip your heart out if given an opportunity.
Injuries notwithstanding, we have witnessed these shortcomings from the QB position since Game 1 & its no longer enough to keep making excuses. I love his technique, his arm, etc. But, IMHO, our biggest liability on offense right now is Tommy Devito.
Mentally and instinctively, he just hasn't had "IT". The TD from last year has only shown up in the 4th quarter of "real" games vs "real" teams not named Holy Cross or Liberty. We need him walking in the door like he's Mike Tyson, aka "Baddest Man On The Planet". That, more than anything else, is what's been missing. JMHO

think the combo of the early throwaway INTs and the intentional groundings are impacting him too.
that intentional grounding hurt. inside the tackles and no sell whatsoever.

This is too far in the other direction, IMO. Prob easier just to say he’s played well at times and not well enough at other times. Uneven performances by a young player with a lot of talent.

I've heard that DeVito has been sacked more than any other quarterback in the country so far. I hope Tommy doesn't get Andrew Robinson syndrome.

I just checked and if you include all 3 drives after the FG drive, we had 119 yards passing.

I was bored, so I checked the box score. We had 13 first downs through the first 51:22 of the game, and 95 of our passing yards came in the last 7:38. Also, we were outgained by the NC State offense.

Stats don’t always tell the whole story for a QB. Ask jay cutler. We don’t know how good he is until the running game and/or oline play improves. Just because he throws a great ball doesn’t make him a great QB. Doesn’t mean he won’t be but there are so many factors that make a great QB, there are a lot of things we aren’t sure he can do well at this point.

DeVito will be excellent next year with an average O-Line. He's going to give SU two full seasons of terrific quarterbacking. This year ... he's learning and performing in spurts. I know many are frustrated, but he's experiencing pretty normal growth as a quarterback. No, he's not Peyton Manning, but he's coming along quicker than, say ... Ryan Nassib did earlier this decade. I am encouraged.
Too bad the defense will take a big step back. I wish we had the recruiting chops to just reload.

A great way to prevent getting hit is throwing the ball instead of holding on to it. So there is more than one factor going on, it’s not just being afraid of getting hit. If that was true he’d throw the ball or run. He had a ton of time last night.

Maybe he wasn’t comfortable making some throws because He was injured, that would make sense. But his ability to read the field is very poor, that’s the biggest issue injured or not and regardless of o-line play.
If he was that injured then he should not have been played. I saw him do some really dumb things that had nothing to do with being injured.
O line is just terrible, which is not helping him at all.

Absolutely, hard to tell if he didn’t throw some of the time when guys were open because of the injury. Overall my comment was based on all the games not just this last one.
