I ask because when we do season predictions this is my biggest factor on how any team will perform. Obviously coaching is important as well but talent is the biggest determination.
Where would Syracuse rank in the ACC as a whole and in the Atlantic division?

We have a Senior experienced QB so that has to help, but 1-85 how would our talent rank?

Has to be bottom 3rd.

Above Wake and BC for sure.

Maybe comp with NC State and Pitt.

But if you include OOC games, you go RI, Cent Mich, USF (I know they have some players - but results matter too).

I'd also throw in that our D coaches consistently have the players playing above they're recruiting rankings (ie. The system works and evens out things out vs teams with slightly higher talent).

I haven't seen enough of the other teams to form an opinion. Recruiting sites would suggest somewhere between 10 and 14.

I'm in this boat. I couldn't even pretend to tell you how we stack up against, say, NC State. I just don't know enough about them to make a comparison. Same goes for half the conference.

For the record I do believe our personal talent level has increased these past 3 years but I am talking in context to the rest of the ACC.

I dont think after you get by FSU/Clemson that the rosters of the rest of the teams differ all that much for the middle 60%. I think we are behind at the top 20% and who knows about the bottom 20%

What SU has been unable to find for over a decade is a difference maker at any one spot. We find solid guys but not game changers. All the other teams , even Wake have seemed to find a guy or 2 that makes plays beyond the scheme. that guy covers up the mistakes in the roster.

You dont need a Freeney/mcnabb/harrison but you need a Kevin Johnson/ismail once in awhile.

I think we're about in the middle, actually. There is a big dropoff after the top teams.

The difference between our roster and others that we've lacked superior playmakers. That put teams we faced last year like Maryland, NC State, Pitt, etc. at an advantage even though the general talent was similar. We're not where we need to be in terms of playmakers yet -- but we're getting there, and the class of 2016 is going to represent an infusion of much needed talent.

If we can somehow qualify for a bowl this year to give the coaches something positive to pitch on the recruiting trail, and build some momentum heading into this offseason, I think we'll have righted the ship. It all comes down to whether or not Lester has the chops to be an adequate OC. If he does, and if his system works, we're in great shape. If not...

I think we are just below the middle. But a sr qb can make up for that.

Virginia is the perfect example of talent alone not being good as coaching matter, but UVA has way more talent on its roster than we do. They just have the worst coach in the ACC right now.

I got seat 1 table 1 so I am on the Final Table now will make it?

I'm in the group that believes its the top 3-4 teams, and then everyone else. We could be anywhere between 5-14. A lot depends on coaching though. GT is near the bottom in terms of recruiting rankings, but they have good coaches and a system that is very difficult to defend.

When I watched UVA last year none of their talent jumped off the screen at me. They look like everyone else.

People who think they've got tons of talent are looking at the recruit rankings and not the actual talent on the field. Personally, I think a lot of the middle of the road state of Virginia talent is over-rated.

Rhode Island Yes
CMU Yes
Wake Forest Yes
LSU No
USF Yes
UVA No
Pitt No
Louisville No
FSU No
Clemson N0
NCS ST N0
BC =

4-7-1
I went 5-7 in my prediction so I would agree with you. I can see us beating UVA or Pitt though because UVA has bad coaching and Pitt is at home.

Actually its the middle of the road talent that has been successful at UVA for the most part. It's the highly rated kids that have been a disappointment for them. They have one amazing player on the roster in SO Safety Quin Blanding. I disagree that VA talent is overrated. Plenty of really good players come out of VA. The problem is that a lot of them are leaving the state nowadays. Stanford, Bama, PSU, Clemson, etc. have really good connections in the state and continue to mine it for elite talent every year.

Virginia had 2 of the top 10 recruits in the country as freshman play. London can recruit UVA has had top 25 recruiting classes he just has sucked getting usage of that talent and his schedules have been insane. I would flip talent right now with UVA in a second.

Not knocking your post in any way shape or form as I agree. I just feel like we have been saying this for the last 3/4 seasons. It's like groundhog's day. Although I guess it's better than saying we are worse on the lines and in terms of playmakers.

like i said when i actually watched them play nobody jumped off the screen me - where I said "holy sheet who is that kid" "i wish we had a player like that". No one. But when I watch FSU and Clemson and Miami play I think that all the time.

Yeah - that's the big caveat to the "how does our talent rank"... How is that talent coached?

Virginia, Miami, Pitt (before Narduzzi), UNC, Syracuse on offense, etc. all have underperformed their talent.

i have a feeling they surprise people this year---no basis for me to think that other than recruiting classes and a couple of coaching changes

I can't tell you what to think but UVA has more talent than we do. We can beat them though as the gap isn't Florida State big but they have more than we do.

I am not bringing coaching into this I am talking about talent and talent only.
