My son and I were supposed to come up for the game today. We spent about three hours in the car and got only as far as York, PA where there was a massive accident that shut down all of I-83 North. All the rush hour traffic heading north was being diverted to side streets, and it was just a gridlocked nightmare.
I made the executive decision to turn around and go home, and instead come up for the Duke game in a few weeks. It would have taken us 8-9 hours instead of the usual five and a half. My son literally cried because he gets so excited for these games and then refused to talk to me for most of the ride home. I finally won him over by saying we could stop at McDonald's on the way home and he could get a Quarter Pounder with bacon and a McFlurry, only to find out in the drive thru that the ice cream machine was broken.
Mid-4th quarter we were feeling good with my decision. Now I'm going to hear about it until the day I die.
I drive the same route; I’ll often drive up to somewhere between Clarks Summit and Binghamton Friday night and get a hotel. Issues from Baltimore to Scranton come up way too often, but once you’re past Scranton the drive is usually smooth sailing (until the crap show that 81 is just before entering Syracuse now).
I left the game today after we missed the FG in the 4th since I had a five year old who was DONE and was making sure I knew it. Watched on my phone and listened in my car to the rest of the game; Syracuse won about when I got to Cortland. I’ve got no problem with my decision - the five year old told me tonight that she had a great time; I’m not sure she’d be so positive if I’d forced her to stay another hour. As a guy who NEVER left games early - I’m surprised at how much bringing little kids to games changes that decision-making.
