Rewatched the first couple of drives this morning. I really hope the staff sends a complaint in after that call.

1.) The call itself was extremely questionable.
2.) If you watch the replay, the sideline ref does not throw the flag until AFTER Pena catches the ball and it hits the ground when Pena is clearly going to score.

I’m not implying the game was rigged by any means. It was almost as if the ref was too lazy to call it initially, then thought “damn, Syracuse is getting yards here I should have thrown the flag.”

Just a really poor job.

Was at the game and everyone in my seat area was wondering what the hell they called there. Interesting that the flag came from the ref on the Miami sidelines. Guarantee effin tee that coaches were yelling in that refs ear to throw that flag and it was definitely after the catch.

Even the rules analyst on TV said it was a bad call. Said the receiver was on the line of scrimmage enough not to make that call.

Funny how it was interpreted. I guess Jason Terry on the radio broadcast said no brainer penalty and shame on us basically.

i thought it was iffy at best

With the Charlotte command center involved i don’t trust them for a second. One of the worst calls i’ve ever seen.

if they want the rule to be easier to enforce then make the lineup more normalized. The WR only needs to be within yd or so of the line ball anyway and then the others back from that.

In reality all the WR are often lined up inside the same area as the oline.

change it so a WR on a side needs to be inside the center waist like an oline and then the others all need to be a full yr or 2 yrs back. Then its all obvious and no ticky tacky calls.

Garbage call. Usual ACC ref incompetence.

But the refs didn’t put their thumb on the scale in a purposeful way. Miami got hit with a couple questionable calls, and ones that could’ve been ignored if the fix was in (see: holding on that Martinez 50 yard run in the 3rd).

inside wr (OG I believe) was on the line and it wasn't even close. some tackles line up deeper than he was in pass pro.

it was a blatant phantom call that could have easily derailed lessor teams
It derailed the gameday chat so we can learn something from the team!

If “anything” the RT was not on the line….OG was a yard in front of him

I also thought that Meeks could have been called for offensive pass interference on his touchdown catch. Looked like he pushed the defender to the ground. I fully expected a flag there, but was obviously relieved that it wasn't.

Same thing was on another pena TD catch they didn’t call. Washington was back, mang was next to him and not clearly on the line and pena was off the line. That one seemed more apparent than the other tbh. The first one was silly.

I've not re-watched it but my memory is that the flag came out immediately, well before the play developed.

It was after. We were getting ready to kick before anyone noticed it in our side

You could literally call illegal formations on 25% of all pass plays in any game anywhere, as tackles are routinely more than a yard off the line of scrimmage. It should have to be more blatant than that for a flag.

In the day if you split you checked with the stripe on alignment. I'm assuming that doesn't happen anymore due to formation and pace changes. It was borderline. Think the timing of the flag is bigger issue. When was it thrown

On initial play i thought so but replay was almost no contact at all.

Even at the time I was 99.9% sure the flag came out late. The way they handled Miami's drive I was looking for a ticky tack call and relieved there wasn't one. Then I scanned back after the catch and run and sure enough.

I'll say I don't think the refs were on the take. I do think the refs were under pressure from the conference not to accidentally @#$# up Miami's bid. I felt the same way about the VT hail mary call being overturned, and the same way with FSU's undefeated season last year. There's always gonna be some error and they seem err on the side of not screwing up payouts.

Generally speaking I really really really can't understand why the NCAA accepts referees being employed by the conferences. With huge payouts depending on results, it's an inherent conflict of interest.

Agreed. In real time it looked like a push off but on the replay I think the DB just went a lil too deep trying to beat Jackson.

Pena must lead the country in TDs called back due to penalties - I believe there have been at least three including this phantom call and the phantom unsportsmanlike conduct call a few games back.
