I'm a Broken Fan

I saw the Davis, Mackey, Little, Nance, Czonka, Morris years on the hill. And I cherished the coach Mac Years...

...Hey, on the lighter side, aren't the leave piling up,on your lawn? Good luck. Take care. Cheers.

I love knowing that we've got legit fans on this board who rooted for those legends !

I happen to live in Brooklyn so the leaves aren't such an issue for me ; )

Fwiw I never missed a game when I was a student 87-91. One of the greatest memories of my life was rushing the field when we beat defending Nat Champ Penn St in '87 so I know what our program can and should be.

I've been going to games since I was a kid in 1971.

Our record since then: 265-251-6. Works out to roughly 6 wins a year on average.

That's what our program has been.

Some years have been better, and some have been worse.

In the 125 years of SU Football history, we've had only SIX seasons with double digit wins, and you were lucky enough to have been on campus for 2 of them (my brother attended 88-92, I attended 81-85, but at least I had Nebraska :D).

We had a good run, but we couldn't sustain it over an extended period of time. Too many strikes against us:
  • We're not a state funded Land Grant school
  • Small alumni base (and too few alums living within 100 miles of the Dome)
  • We're in a part of the country that doesn't produce a lot of Div 1 talent
  • We're in a part of the country that really doesn't care about college football
It's nice that you think we should be a 10-11 game winner every season. Just don't get your hopes up.

I know you hear it all the time but give it a year or two and we'll be back up there like the good old days.

I survived So Fla, barely, but yesterday's game really broke me as a fan.

I can't continue to invest so much energy and time into this program to be continually frustrated on game day. It ruins my weekend, half of my week and my wife thinks I'm a lunatic - the sad part is of course she's right.

I suppose I shouldn't let these losses effect my life so much. Maybe at 46 years old I'm not mature enough to act like an adult fan but that's who I am.

Maybe I'm a failure as a fan. Maybe I have issues putting sports in perspective. I don't know. All I do know is that I need to make an effort to be less invested in the outcome of a football team I have absolutely no control over.

I've felt this way after other losses and before the week is out I come crawling back, but I want this time to be different ... I think.

Idek what that even means - maybe I ban myself from reading stuff until Friday, maybe I can honestly remove any expectation to win while watching games, i really don't know, but I can't let The Cuse's underperforming football team impact my life so negatively anymore. It's been too many years of pain.

If anyone has any suggestions I'm all ears

Quit your not a true fan, pick a top program and enjoy them. You will be Happy.

If SU football losses are the thing in life that cause you the most grief, then you lead a charmed life...

Honestly, you're better off picking a perennial power to be a fan of if you get this down after a loss. Go root for FSU, Clemson, Bama, LSU, etc. Because the chances that Syracuse will ever remotely compete on that level are slim to none. I've realized and accepted it. And the sooner you accept it the better off you'll be.

How in the world can this game be the straw that breaks the camels back? anyone still left from the Gerg era that feels broken must have a real short memory. and if so, then you'll forget about this quick.

The program has taken a step back. That is the issue. No one here wants to have to go through another coaching change as it means another 3 years of waiting to be good. If Shafer had kept us flat post GRob no one would have an issue. That fact that so many fans here have talked themselves into moral victories against BAD teams is concerning. I guess it is denial of what is happening.

Taken a step back from what? The one good Marrone year? We've been mediocre save last season for the last 7 years. Horrible in the Gerg era and mediocre for the last bunch of P years.

I'm not giving up on a bowl this year. That would be pretty much in line with most of Marrone's years. 5-7 wins.

But the difference is playmaker at QB. Nassib's trajectory was steady and slow until 2012. Dungey's is sky high for the next 3.5 years.

Exactly. Didn't end well - but it was exciting and competitive. I'll take one of these a week vs losing 65-0 to FSU.

We are losing to bad teams. If we don't make up for it by beating some good teams then that is a big step back. I have never been high on Shafer/Bullough D gameplans. We play the same every week. We try to take away the run (even against teams who don't try and run) and then try to bring pressure on 3rd down. The fact that we never seem ready for screens (both to RB and bubble) is unacceptable. If our D matches up well with the O it looks great. If it doesn't it looks bad. That is why we have seen inconsistent games the last 7 years. On O I don't mind Lester's system but his plan of attack hasn't made much sense this year. I don't think these guys do a very good job planning for their opponent. I expect the young talent to get better as the year goes on. But unless the coaches get better quickly, we aren't beating one of those good teams.

I agree but think you're overstating your case.

In any regard - we'll see. Got some good teams coming up.
