Shreveport (US dict: ˈshrēv-ˌpȯrt, ipa: /ˈʃriːvpɔrt/) is the third largest city in the state of Louisiana and the 109th-largest city in the United States. It is the seat of Caddo Parish[1] and extends along the Red River (most notably at Wright Island, the Charles and Marie Hamel Memorial Park, and Bagley Island) into neighboring Bossier Parish. Bossier City is separated from Shreveport by the Red River. The population of Shreveport was 199,311 at the 2010 census,[2] and the Shreveport-Bossier City Metropolitan Area population exceeds 441,000.[3] The Shreveport-Bossier CityMetropolitan Statistical Area ranks 112th in the United States, according to the United States Census Bureau.[4]

Shreveport was founded in 1836 by the Shreve Town Company, a corporation established to develop a town at the juncture of the newly navigable Red River and the Texas Trail, an overland route into the newly independent Republic of Texas and, prior to that time, into Mexico.[5]

Shreveport is the commercial and cultural center of the Ark-La-Tex region, where Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas meet. Many people in the community refer to the city of Shreveport as "The Port City".

Shreveport isn't a bad destination, but I'm still hoping for Dallas. It's northern Louisiana so the Cajun culture and creole culture are minimal . It's more traditional old south than say Baton Rouge or New Orleans. I have spent time there calling on LSU -Shreveport and Bossier Parish Community College.

I was stationed at Barkatraz, ... I mean Barksdale AFB for two years, over 20 years ago - and I still have flashbacks (just kidding). One of my daughters was born there.

Expect culture shock, they expect the south to rise up against the north any day now. If you stay in the hotel/casino areas, you will be fine. Like France, Mexico, South America and Africa, Europe and Asia, as long as you have greenbacks you are safe in the tourist areas.

Bossier City is kind of the Red Neck side of the Red River.

You can get some Cajun cooking but I have been gone so long, I cannot identify the good restaurants. Ralph & Cackoos? Blackened Mahi Mahi was off the charts!

Best and least expensive thing to do is to fly into Dallas and drive over. If the spouses are coming, too, plan an extra day in Dallas for them or if they like to gamble, stay an extra day in Shreveport. For any military retirees the golf course at Barksdale used to be very nice and you may be able to lock in an hotel room at the base lodging, which is an historic site and used to be very nice.

My wife says that any ladies that come along may like to stop in Marshall, TX, (about halfway between Dallas and Shreveport) and look at the pottery. I say otherwise, (it's boring to look at, heavy to carry, won't be cheap to ship anywhere especially 0n a plane) but I love my wife so I have complied with her request.

If our Orange are headed there, I may do the day trip thing and bring the clan along for Orange support. GO ORANGE!
