I'm nervous this is a wake me up in a year situation

All that grit and want just to be up by 2 with LeMoyne having the ball with 20s left.

The minimum should be a "want to win", however you quantify such a thing.
We havent met that minimum, at least via eye test, for years.

it was a disappointing margin of victory but I can’t say I was disappointed by our effort. We didn’t finish well at the rim, we had some dumb fouls, and we looked well out of sync offensively in the first half. Stuff that can be worked on

I think it's always good to breathe and take a step back -- good or bad. So I'm with you on both counts, trying not to get too bent out of shape. But I will say I think the tournament feels like a reach for this group and my bigger worry than that is actually that I'm a bit concerned about Red long-term. Not a 'fire red!!!!' post, just curious to see what our adjustments are and how we proceed in terms of accentuating the positives and trying to scheme around the deficiencies. Whether that means 12-13 wins or 20 is still a question I'm pondering, but if it wound up being a bad season where the roster didn't come together the way he hoped I can live with a bad season. Hopefully, in that scenario, he can find ways to put better rosters together going forward. But it's more that I was really hoping to see some significant strategic adjustments this year and in one tiny sample, we didn't see that.
Same boat. Boeheim earned a legacy successor, I'm fine with waiting, but I don't expect too ever feel like anyone else would want autry running their show

Nowwww I remember why I stop coming to this board during bball season. Usually it’s about 5-6 games in. This year it only took 1. My goodness are some of you depressing
This board is very bipolar for sure. I'm guilty of it myself. But, to be fair, the questions defensively were there last year so we're not really talking about a one-game sample in terms of defensive philosophy.

I think where I'm struggling is that I don't see the over-arching vision of this team. We want to run a pressure m2m system with heavy ball denial, but we have two centers who don't really fit that mold and two perimeter guys (Bell and Starling) who don't really excel in that scenario either.

Offensively, we look better when Lampkin is on the floor but I'm still a bit confused about what we want this to look like. We tried a little high post stuff, which I think is a good thing, but it looked clunky and we didn't run much action off of it. The high ball screen stuff is good but that's a starting point, not an offensive system. We aren't going to beat people off the dribble, but we defaulted to 1-on-1 stuff last night because we were superior athletically and in terms of size.

So my point is, I'm still unclear of how we attack things against better opponents. Just a lot of questions right now, I think.

We are going to have real issues at the point, I worry about shooting as usual, and I think they can't defend

It's 11/4 I need to relax but it's hard to have confidence
Shot selection was horrible.
Shooting form was horrible. One dude hucked it like a shot put.
The dudes shooting weren't always the right dude.
Literally what more is there to worry about?

Maybe at some point. Like, maybe Red takes a bit of time and figures this out. But I'm with you at the moment. He's here because JB wanted it this way and that's cool. But he has a ton to prove and, in my humble opinion, a ton to learn in a short period of time.

Questions going into the offseason:

Defense
Lead Guard
Rebounding

Looks like we may have solved 1/3 our rebounding looks solid. Our big guys worked hard on the boards they will be undersized when we start league play so they will need to keep up the extreme effort.

I think the "is red the right guy" conversation is going to happen end of this year.

The defense last night made me gag so much that i turned off the game. We either are a team that is a collection of one year dudes who can't play man defense or we become a team that can play man2man complimentary that works.

It's concerning to no end. I think we're going to learn how good a coach we had here for 40 plus years. He lasted too long (and i'm not looking to get into that argument) but a hall of fame coach will smooth over alot of deficiencies.
This is something I'm not sure this board will ever actually truly understand, but I think that's what we're seeing. Even some of those teams toward the end -- they were teams I couldn't believe were able to actually compete and yet we did. JB figured a lot of stuff out over 40 years ... Red is learning. Here's hoping he learns quickly.

I need to see a trend. We had a game where we didn't play well. That's not a trend, it can be just a single result.

We've got a lot of new guys. It's not usually smooth sailing when there's not a lot of roster continuity.

Apart from Starling who is going to want to hang around for next year?

Bell and Freeman might want to showcase their talents for the NBA at a better program like Gonzaga or Kentucky.

Carlos, Lamp, Davis are done.

Moore will be angry he didn't play more and transfer.

Petar, Taylor, Cuffe, McLeod, Westry probably stay on the roster because of no better options but the last 2 are like Sidebe and may never play again.

We couldn't even get Leffew after hiring his coach so its likely a very young team top portal guys will go elsewhere.

Last thing I care about is who is here next year. Wth.

I'm generally an optimist, and I am not exactly giving up hope at this point, but it's certainly a deja vu situation here. And, to be frank, even if we do improve considerably by the end of the year, it just doesn't matter. If we pick up a couple really bad loss early and/or can't win one or two of the marquee out-of-conference games, we are sunk before conference season even starts. And, as we learned last year, even winning close games against crap teams will hurt us badly in computer numbers if we are on the bubble.

So yes, I'm willing to give it a few weeks, where hopefully we get everyone healthy and get our act together on defense. But after the last 5 years, you can't fault folks for thinking here we go again...

What makes you think Gonzaga of all places would want Bell?

Come on if you don't think a senior Bell will be very high in demand your crazy dude can shoot and is tall and athletic.

Maybe he'll be like Starling and staying here makes the most sense but I think he's going to have a lot of bags to pick from.

Undersized? 6’11”, 6’10”, 6’7”. How is that undersized?

Why would Gonzaga or Kentucky take Bell for anything other than a sharp shooter off the bench?

Maybe not. Though I recall some on this board don't agree, many believe JB actually wanted GMac to succeed him. But ADJW chose Autry as the more senior assistant coach.

The big concern is (and again it's early) what is our defensive belief? How do we want to play? Red is now in year 2 and our defensive principles should be established. Can't blame Judah and Q, or lack of size. We need to establish what we are committed to on that end. 30 plus games into the Red tenure and I have no idea.

This team is going to be really interesting. Really looking forward to them playing a quality team so I can really get a good look. They are sharing the ball really well.

JB wanted Gerry and pushed for Gerry.

Yup, you guys probably know better than I. Point is, I do think JB wanted it to stay in-house. But I certainly don’t know enough to disagree on this point.

Goal is the tournament. Nothing else.

This team isn’t talented. You can’t fill up a roster of mid majors and underperforming P4 guys and expect anything else.

We need to lock up the 2025 class and look to overhaul a lot of the roster.

Red needs to keep growing as a coach.

Through that lens, it’s fine.
It's not fine.

The team is more talented than what you're giving it credit for on paper. You have two McDonald's All-Americans on your roster (Starling, Freeman), one of which was named to the ACC's All-Freshman Team. You have a third-year starter (Bell) who you have basically anointed as the best shooter on your team. And you have a transfer center who was a legitimate P4 player and a guy who started for multiple NCAA Tournament teams.

Carlos, Davis (who I think is good), and Taylor are all overrated by this fan base. So I agree with you there. But to say there's no talent is not true -- and to say the team isn't talented enough to beat LeMoyne by more than 4 points is also not true.

Tournament or bust, that is for sure. And if no tournament, Red Autry should absolutely be put on notice.

Right? We'll probably blow Colgate out by 30 points and the total theme of this board will change...again lol. I think the good news is we still scored 86 points while shooting 18% from 3 and 65% from the line. Assuming that both those numbers will average out much higher as the year goes on, I think we'll be OK. The bad news is we gave up 82 to Lemoyne and they shot fairly average...

Well, other than the individual truly/ultimately responsible for having the successor in place running the show, that being ADJW.

When Director of Athletics John Wildhack created a list of potential future head coaches, he reached the same conclusion Autry was ready.

Wildhack said, Autry has been exposed to every aspect of the sport, and that uniquely prepares him for the job. “Adrian earned this,” Wildhack said Friday. “Adrian’s not here because he’s an alum, because he played here, because he’s an associate coach here. He’s here because I believe he’s the best candidate to lead this program and sustain the success that coach Boeheim has established over 47 years.”

Completely agree.

What I saw last night wasn't some fluke shooting night by Lemoyne and an off night by Syracuse shooting. I saw Lemoyne as the better team, better coached. There wasn't urgency, I didn't see any sense of a press earlier to get the guys jazzed up.

It was an effort that made me wonder about Red. One game in. Small sample size but it was disconcerting esp in light of the effort we see from Fran daily
