IMO it’s imperative

Who on Fortin's list can guarantee him a starting spot? Not Vanderbilt. Not Kansas. Who can tell him that he'd be #2 right out of the gate with an open competition to start next year? Well all three schools will likely tell him that he will have an opportunity to win the job but maybe only at Kansas could he be #2 immediately. At Syracuse, it's a definite. Our QB depth chart is embarrassing for a P5 program. By contrast, we're looking pretty good right now for next year at WR/TE. It's an ideal situation for a transfer.

Why couldn't Vandy guarantee him a starting spot?

Why would any coach ever guarantee a kid a starting spot? Recipe for utter disaster when it doesn't work out.

How about... "Look, you know who's on our roster at QB. If you come to Syracuse, work your tail off, learn the playbook and understand the speed at which we're trying to play, you will be given all the opportunity to lead our offense. That's our promise, but the rest is up to what you make of it."

Put another way, why wouldn't Fortin walk into a very likely starting role at Vandy?

An improved OL would make all the difference, however, we don't have WRs that can break press coverage against better corners (Clem, FSU, etc). Tommy could have all the time in the world, but there still needs to be a hole to throw it to. I'm not as convinced a pocket passer works unless the overall talent amongst those skill positions improves.
Especially when the "pocket passer" doesn't consistently make the correct read and/check down to the hot WR. Not all of the sacks were the fault of the OLine.

vandy qb job is wide open, they graduated their grad transfer starter, are left with a RS soph and a RS sr, both have barely seen the field, and a true FR.

I want to see us get another dual threat QB like Dungey. I know I'll take flak for this, but from my eyes, an efficient, dual threat QB in this offense is wayyyyy more difficult to defend than more of a traditional, pocket-based QB.

That would be my BIGGEST priority if I'm Dino right now. That and a big ass NT.

100%. Give me a guy who can potentially beat you with his arm & his legs. A QB who can put a scare into the defense by running the ball when things break down, opens up the pass game.

Nassib was in a different system than what Devito has. Also, Nassib had a very good OL in 2012.

I'm convinced a dual threat QB is perfect for this system. Dungey obviously had his flaws, but him being able to extend the play with his legs forced the linebackers/secondary to stay on their toes and open things up for the pass catchers.

This makes 100% sense, since this is a read-option offense. Every play is an option - the QB read, what routes the receivers take, etc. Get somebody back there who has to be defended for both the run and the pass. That takes away some of the blitzing that killed TD this year.

I think a dual threat this lacking our oline imperative.

Agreed, but he was a very smart QB that completely understood the system and would keep the ball on read options just enough to keep defenses honest, especially in critical situations.

He always made the right reads at the LOS and got the offense in the correct play. That is something TD needs to work on.
Agreed. Very smart player. If he could throw the long ball like Tommy he might have made it in the NFL.
If Ryan had some of the receivers that followed him he would have completed many more passes. Lemon was his only really reliable target.

There are way more positives than negatives for the dual-threat option IMHO.

Ideally we'd get a QB this class too, but if not we will definitely need two in 2021
We absolutely need one (Fortin) this year. If the starter goes down we have a guy who is a quality backup (DeVito or Fortin)
