In 38 bowls, we have 76 teams...

And you won't remember most of them, either.

It's the old Independence Bowl in Shreveport, LA

http://www.suathletics.com/sports/2006/1/31/independencebowl1979.aspx

Orange running back Joe Morris had 155 yards on 33 carries. SU had only a 3-0 lead at the half on a 40-yard field goal by Gary Anderson. Fullback Ken Mandeville scored on a one-yard run in the third quarter, but McNeese matched that score to cut the Orange lead to three.

In the fourth quarter, Bill Hurley threw a nine-yard scoring pass to Art Monk and scored himself from the one yard line. Tom Matichak scored SU’s final touchdown from six yards out.

I've got to to research the economics of bowl games when I have free time because I have no idea how they make money. There is no geographic fit to some of these games, e.g. Rutgers and UNC are playing in Detroit. Unless you have a connection to the game or are betting on it, who is going to go see that?

My favorite may be the Boca Raton Bowl (it's safe to assume the obvious). It is between NIU and Marshall. They are really missing a trick if they don't offer big senior citizen discounts. And there is this: “Outside of the New Year’s bowls, this is probably the best matchup in the country,” NIU coach Rod Carey said Sunday... I'm not sure about that.

I also really like the Bahamas Bowl. Well done to W. Kentucky and Central Michigan for playing their way into that one. They should play more games in the Caribbean. Turks & Caicos Bowl anyone?

Central Michigan went 7-5? What do you know? We beat a bowl team. Who knew?

That seems so long ago.

More things like bowls are needed to create economic activity and opportunity.

Just fun games that do solid ratings and give fans a chance to watch their favorite team one more time.

No one complains about the NIT.

There should be a bowl in the Dome sponsored by a winter sport company, like Polaris. The Polaris Snow Bowl. MAC vs. AACK. OR Bombardier. Sell some snow mobiles and apparel.

Never understood why people complain about too many bowls. Who cares, we know what bowls mean what, I personally had a great time watching the Texas Bowl last winter .

...weird how no one complained the last two years.

I have no problem with it, as there's nothing wrong with more football in my book.

However, I do think it's silly that a 6-6 team gets "rewarded" with a bowl. I mean, that's the definition of average.

Bowl season sure is a fun time though, especially since it's around the time of Christmas.

This is exactly how I feel. I think it is a little silly that you don't have to be at least 7-5 but I will probably watch part of most of the games if I have nothing else going on.

Bowls are awarded on a pass/fail basis. 6-6 = D.

I love them too.

The air around the holidays is just pleasant and nice, and I love being able to have couple jack & egg nogs while watching the Orange.

I'll watch them all too. Happy Hour, at night, weekends...just put 1 on and I'm in.

Or the proliferation of pre-season hoops tournaments.

It's not a reward, it's just a 13th regular season game that two-thirds of FBS participate in.

SU is in that pathetic other 1/3rd.

It's a reward to the players. An unexpected trip for the kids where they are treated really well for a few days. Participate in some fun activities and can site see the city they are in. They are usually given a kings meal or two the time they are in the city for the Bowl. For the kids its a reward. For the fans its just another game.
