Bryan Harsin Boise St. Chris Peterson protege, Coyle prior hire, 17-3 at Boise, currently the 19th ranked offense and 5th ranked defense in the country, best combination in FBS.

Justin Fuente Memphis. Gary Patterson protege. Knows the formula at a small private school. 8th ranked offense, defense after thought right now. 15-3 last two years.

Phil Montgomery Tulsa - might need some more time in the barrel, first year at Tulsa after a full career of learning how to build a dynamic program in a small private school at Baylor. Currently 7th ranked offense, 122nd defense.

* Because just like the Boy Scouts say, Be Prepared**

**I said once Hunt got hurt this should be a free year and 2016 was worth evaluating, I'm not in favor of Shafer being let go. But if it comes to it, here's the guys I would want interviewed.

The good thing is, is that if the worst case scenario happens and we suck it up again resulting in Shaf getting canned, I actually have 100% confidence in Coyle. If Gross were still in charge...oh my!

We are in good hands going forward with our new AD.

Oh you're gonna get agenda'd on this.

A few others though because this is not an endorsement of change, just a fun exercise. Forgive me for not knowing the names and not having a google friendly moment.

ECU coach

Marshall coach.

Just curious, who is coaching Toledo these days? They seem to be having one of those years that gets MAC coaches promoted to better leagues.

The guy that just got sh!tcanned at Maryland. (Just kidding)

I really hope Shafer is given some time. He's a ball coach and scoring well with recruits, and a guy with character that I want to see succeed. The disruption to the progress we've made will be significant if we have to start yet again. Many folks want to start over again, but I think that dooms us to another half decade of disappointment. If we change coaches again, perhaps we should just have a perennial guest coach of sorts and give up on any long-term consistency. We can change coaches on non-election years so as not to mess with political schedules. Is Shafer & his staff really the problem?

Just for fun:

When/if the time comes, I think Coyle will pull a big surprise out of his hat that we will all be happy about.

If we have to hire somebody this offseason, I want to bring in to bring in a guy in charge of an elite offense,, like a TCU OC or a Baylor OC.

Yes they won't have prior HC experience, but darnit all I want an elite offensive scheme if we can't have a family atmosphere like Shafer has going on within the program.

Hey, why not have both.

Fuente - OC at TCU and HC at Memphis.

Montgomery - OC at Baylor and HC at Tulsa.

Harsin was born and raised in Boise. Played his college ball at Boise. Might be tough to get him out of Boise.

Chip Kelly? He will be looking to get back in the college game real soon! LOL

What progress have we made since he took over? Not trying to be a wise ass by asking that, it's a legit question. I'm curious as to what progress you see.

Recruiting is better. Not by a large measure, but better.

Marrone wasn't a recruiter.

I would want an O HC the problem is that it is very risky to go with an OC. So if you are limited to realistic HCs who have O backgrounds you choices are only Campbell, Fuente, Harsin, and Rhule. Montgomery I think rather wait for a B12 job to open.

Recruiting. Which will take a little time to transition into wins. Look at the Fr, RFr and sophomores.

don't discount Matt Patricia. He wants it and would be an interesting hire who has cny ties.

Recruiting and consistency. I think he and his guys have done a good job recruiting and that we have good young players choosing SU. I also think consistency is important, especially to players and their families. There are many, probably including yourself, that are far more qualified than I am in assessing Shafer's innate ability as head coach.

My perspective is that it takes time for coaches to find their groove and we're better off with a ball coach than a media personality. Our best coaches took many years to prosper. At least Shafer is determined, motivated, and shows well for perseverance.

I get that he may not be the first choice of offensive football purists, but how often can we change coaches without causing additional damage to the program? How many coaches have we had that had instant success? How many top coaches would SU attract if Shafer was terminated?

It's been 20 years since the program has been consistently competitive. I don't want to wait for another 20 years because we can't be patient and give the program time to develop. I don't see that a change for the sake of change is necessarily our best option. If nothing else, Shafer has had a positive impact on our defense. Perhaps not so much this year but overall I think his defenses have been our best element in the recent past.

Since Shafer has taken over our D has gotten marginally better (it's been pretty good since he got here with Marrone).

Recruiting is up.

And this year the offense has gotten way better than his first two years. It's inconsistent due to youth, but the system appears healthy - and if you don't think Erv/Dungey/Jordan / Ishmeal aren't better talent at their ages than we ever had during the Marrone years - I can't help you.

Ha! Proven!

Nothing was proven either way. Since his classes were the bad/mediocre (without a solid QB recruit) and he didn't have the advantages Shafer and company have - it's literally a comparing apples to oranges.

The facts are that the classes Shafer has brought in are better. That is proven. The "why" they are better is debatable.

I never mentioned Shafer so stop hijacking my posts anytime Marrone is mentioned as if I'm attacking your boy toy. Jesus.

Look at what GRob left Marrone and compare to what Marrone left Shafer. GRob left zero depth but you could argue that the starters GRob left were better.
