In my opinion, I do not want the court moved for duke

I don't want it either, especially not in the first year. Play a couple of seasons to get a feel for the demand for the game, before embarking on a potentially embarrassing situation. Everyone is assuming that it will sell out no matter how many seats they add. If SU is bent on adding seats, I would prefer they put in some temp high-risers above the movable seating section, adding some 3,000 seats, rather than relocate and turn the court.

They'd have to be pretty certain that demand exists for 15,000+ additional seats. Too many potential problems. Anything from a lousy weather evening to a three-game losing streak for SU would result in the game being played in a half-empty football stadium. Seems like a bad idea.

Yeah guys, let's never do anything awesome just because we can. Ever.

Well, a 35k sell-out is already pretty freaking awesome. A 38k (out of 50k) with horrible sight lines that torques-off all of the fans - just because we can - would not be awesome. That's why I recommend waiting a few years to see just how high is the demand for the game.

Why do you assume 1) the sight lines will be horrible and 2) all the fans will be torqued off? There's a lot of upside to this.

I'm all for it! There will be a ton more media exposure versus the current configuration and will lock SU in the record books for the on campus single game attendance record.

Why did you split it into 2 separate issues? The fans will be ticked because of the sight lines, not in addition to. A large portion of SU fans don't want to stand the whole game just to be able to glimpse the court. The sight lines will suck if you turn the court and put it at the 50 yard line because of the distance from the stands to the court.

The Dome can't afford to do for a regular season game what the NCAA does for the final 4s in other larger domes, such as construct all of those seats from the sidelines in. Only the east end of the Dome's bleachers is movable, so you wouldn't be able to roll both ends up to the court. Can you imagine 50 rows of floor seats on each end of the court? How awesome would the view be from, say row 40 on the floor?

I still don't see the harm in being patient and verifying for a couple of years that the additional demand exists to warrant the effort and expense of doing this for one game a year.

Well, because they are two separate issues.

Suppose the experience is so awesome, you're not even all that aware that your sight lines aren't great. That happens.

Maybe, just maybe, the live experience here improves doing this.

On the first, I don't know that that's the case. If the two teams are in the top-ten, there's going to be a lot of press coverage. Will there be more coverage if there's a different court configuration? I don't know. But the amount of exposure SU gets is finite and mainly dependent on wins and losses.

Also, SU's already cemented the largest on-campus crowd (probably the 150 largest crowds). Not only would this be unremarkable from that standpoint, SU has already demonstrated that it prefers to increase the record incrementally. That allows them to do a "break the record" promotion every couple seasons. If they fill the place (unlikely, in my opinion), they'd remove that possibility from every future game. Attempting to sell out the building runs counter to their most reliable promotional tool.

This is one of the best arguments I've seen against doing it. Well done, OttoMets.

Still for it, but well done.

Demand is driven by publicity. Expanding to accommodate 50K is enough publicity to garner an extra 15K attendees, not to mention initiation year into ACC, hosting Duke for the first time, and both K and JB still coaching. Are you kidding; worried about selling out? It would be a sure thing. All these factors will never come together again. In order to take advantage of opportunity, one has to recognize it.

I'm not saying that it should be done. I am saying that if it is done it would sell out. It would be one of the surest sell-outs in the history of college BB.

When does College Gameday start going to campuses? Because if we do this, they would HAVE to be at that game, right? I mean, assuming they put this on a Saturday, which if they have any sense they will. Make this an 8 PM tipoff on a Saturday night and have Gameday there and just watch all of the ESPN features on JB and K's friendship, Silent G being the guy who has played for both schools, etc, throughout the week.

This is a potential goldmine for us and ESPN.

I already paid for my tix and made my donation to have the seats I have with the court where it is.

I kinda like the idea based on the opportunity to set a record with the two winningest coaches in the history of college basketball on the sidelines. The hype and attention that Cuse would get would be unsurmountable. It would make for a fabulous weekend with many drinks abound. I can also see the poor situation that COULD unfold if season ticket holders and doners were messed for the potential biggest game of the year.

I ponder this, though, would it be better to put the court perpendicular or parallel to the football field? I for one can see this as a success if the court were placed perpendicular as I think the season ticket holders could be accommodated with behind the basket seats or sideline seats with temporary bleachers (like those we already use) on each sideline. In this case you could probably (I assume) still use the third deck behind the temp bleaches bleachers, and then all three levels that have good enough sightlines on the baseline (football sidelines). I Don't think 50 thous could effectively fill in this way but possibly 45 thous? What do you guys think?

bogus bush league, screws season ticket holders, and all the non fans will come. maybe mike ortiz can write a blog on this
All the non-fans will come is a negative? Paid attendance, for one of our revenue sports at a home game, is a negative in some way? Seriously, you can't win with this crowd.

And by the way, it's MAJOR league. Any other shool would love to be able to do it, and would love to have 45Kplus fans who cared to be there to view it. We can do it (with our incredible dome), and we will do it well. I think it's great that our base bleeds orange so much, that even the thought of having to sit 20 yards further from the action in their cherished seats gets their blood boiling. That's a passionate fanbase. These are champagne problems people. Don't worry, be happy...

Listen, your entitled to your own opinion and if this happens I will be excited and like the idea. However, if you think SU won't take care of its season-ticket holders who pony up a lot money your crazy. I mean its hilarious that you don't want non-fans coming to the game how do you expect SU to expand its fanbase unless it creates new fans. I said months ago I loved this idea and people who are season ticketholders don't have faith they will be taken care and my argument to them is wait till SU announces this and gives your seats before you complain. If SU gives season-ticketholders the equivalent seat they have throughout the year it should be fine. With North Carolina, NC State, Pittsburgh, Notre Dame, Miami, Villanova, Boston College, Clemson, and Indiana along with Duke on the schedule people need to have faith in Dr. Gross and his staff pulling this off and giving season ticketholders great seats.

Impossible to give many season tix holder the equivalent or even close. You said 3 times they will but it is impossible with the shape of the Dome.

For all you know, your seat might even be better. I can understand locals being upset when a football game is moved to Jersey, but I think in this case any anger might be very premature. And as we know, nothing premature is ever good.

I know the Dome. It's physically impossible to give many people comparable seats.,for example, where do you put people in 210 or 211?

Those are great seats. I think by reconfiguring it will open up more floor and 100 level seats. Thus 210 should move closer.

So you think they will bring in portable bleachers that go from the floor to near the top of the dome? And go almost straight up to keep the people in the current side court 200's and lower 300's at the same distance from the court? That will also block a lot of other seats.

For all the season ticket holder snobs - you can afford to watch just one game not in your ordinary seat. Just sit back and enjoy history being made. Or at least let us commoners do so.
