Indiana - uh yeah

The tires were kicked on Cignetti. He was not interested. This was said and known back in 2023. Cig was only going to leave JMU for a Big Ten school with deep pockets. Indiana had a poor history, but was committed and had a massive alumni base that was becoming engaged. Just stop, Cuse will never have the money or resources to pull someone like Cig. Chesney and Fran were the two we could have gotten, and they were the two finalists we chose from.

Cig was one of the hottest commodities in the coaching carousel. SU is a private school with a small alumni and donor base. Indiana is a massive state university with an enormous alumni and donor base - history does not matter when it comes to money and resources. No one cares that we won a national championship in 1959. We can't coulda, shoulda, woulda our way to more money.
Thank you 1000X over. This is getting exhausting.

What if Gross had hired Nick Saban instead of GROB??

Cignetti was never, ever, ever going to sign a contract with Syracuse. Not. Ever. And that was pretty well understood even on this board in 2023 when we were looking for a coach. Would we have wanted him? Absolutely. But - it wasn’t going to happen.

Stuff like this is why I have a hard time taking people who criticize Wildhack seriously. “He should have done something we knew was impossible at the time!” It’s just fans looking to be miserable and inventing absurd reasons to justify that.
Well, to be fair, we are getting Mullen, so he had to look elsewhere.

ya JW is a great AD. Overseeing this awesome stretch of football, basketball and lacrosse is quite the feat.

You JW fanboys are even harder to take seriously. Your like the North Korean citizens that think Kim Jong Un is a great leader.
With the financial constraints of SU's budget, the disarray that was the AD when JW took over, the ongoing conference issues, ESPN stringing the ACC along, limited donor pool, limited donor donations, who would have done better as AD?

I like JW, but he is not the end all be all. However, I cannot think of anyone who would do a significantly better job. Remember, when you have circumstances like UM, UT, OU, tOSU, Alabama, Etc al., it is easy to look outstanding. Few have faced SU's constraints. Few would have willingly accepted the challenge of SU's constraints. Even fewer would not stick with SU's constraints.

Is the title of this thread a subtle nod to Indiana's favorite son, John Mellencamp?

Will be interesting to see how Chesney does going forward. He's off to a good start. I've mentioned it before, but shocked that I've heard no buzz about anyone coming after Indiana's coordinators. Gotta imagine they'll be high on people's list next year

I agree with all of your reasoning, but he was not one of the hottest commodities.

Also SU kicking the tires is news to me. Thanks for the info.
How do we really know “hot” he was in 2023. A lot of initial tire kicking is done in private and the vast majority of open jobs he apparently would not have been interested in.
