Inside Syracuse’s rough off-season: How portal misses and a lack of NIL money led to a lost year

UConn finished second for Flagg. What do you think he was asking?
I read 4.2 million is what he ended up with. UConn doesn’t have the Nike money flowing quite like Duke. I assume they were getting the New England and National Championship courtesy visit. It was well known he was going to Duke well before he committed.

I understand he was going to Duke. But living in Ct as I do, they have money for hoop. Unlike us, they don't really have to "share" it with football. And like everything else, if you win a couple of titles, the money flows in. People want to be part of a winner

I know this isn't popular here but I really want to see what fran does without the great qb play we had this year. We were so very close to being 7-5 this year. And if we were 7-5, you can forget about those guys playing in a meaningless bowl game.
Yeah. I’m whistling thru the graveyard too. I think Nixon makes a difference here, but McCord was a unicorn recruit for us.

I hope we sustain, but our schedule is brutal. I can withstand a step back to around .500, but I hope this isn’t a 3-9 type of season.

People just ignore our home schedule. We did lose to both Pitt and B.C. this year.

That’s a problem here. Theres a lot of people who won’t donate cause they don’t believe in Red. You see people post about it here constantly.

The Big East teams funnel all their $ to hoops. They are really well situated for success.

Look, they weren't donating before this year either. And last year was a pretty good effort by Red. Has any kid that transferred from last years team even started for their new team? This year is a disaster. But to not donate because of Red right now is just an excuse in my book if you are a real fan. Now the band wagon fans, I get. There is no band wagon to jump on.

I’m a little concerned about what was written today about OrangeUnited. I think it was Sam Holland who wrote that 19% of money donated goes to administrative costs. That’s insane. That means for every #1 million donated, administration gets $190,000. We were also promised access to the programs through behind the scenes stuff, but that has never materialized. If true, I might stop donating and just give to the University. At least that’s tax deductible.

Don't disagree at all.

I think it's important to also note that what highlighting NIL as "the reason" does is create an unfair expectation that Alex Kline is either going to or has to be the reason why SU is good next year.

The media narrative solely focuses on this instead of on-court preparedness, etc, and thus if the portal doesn't come together this year, Alex is to blame, not the entirety of the staff.
Please, show me how anyone short of Jesus makes this roster championship quality. Yeah JAB, Coach K, Pat Riley or some other Hall of Famer could have squeezed out a couple more wins but ony Jesus could make this group a contender.

You are in your early 30s and finally reached a level where you are no longer living pay check to pay check. You can start to give small sized donations $1,000 or less a year to support the NIL funds of your college sports team (maybe you’re also an alumni of the school). That money 10 years ago would go almost exclusively to Men’s Basketball. However in the present, who has earned our trust and can effectively communicate their vision for the future and excite fans. That describes Fran Brown and Felicia Legette-Jack (I give a pass for this season because I really believe she is dealing with way worse headwinds from NIL) for me at the moment. Adrian Autry should and probably will face an uphill battle for designation of donations from small donors. He can fix that reputation quickly with a strong finish. Perhaps medium to major size donors that communicate with him on a regular basis believe and support him. But while I think the men’s basketball product has gotten a little better over the last few months since the start of ACC play, I think anyone who was there in person or watched on tv is scarred from what they witnessed against Maryland at Barclays.

I think there is significant hangover from the JB era. Insofar as the hoops fan base has never had to raise a nickel to be competitive.

JB was cheap and good….forever. Melo and other whales built the Melo center.

The drumbeat from the AD has always been about needing $ for football.

Now here we are and the dynamics have changed and we’ve been slow to react and somewhat disorganized. JB didn’t embrace NIL and left behind no structure whatsoever. It has to be built from scratch with a new staff and first time head coach.

SU hoops might have a huge fan base, but they’ve never been universally solicited for donations. I don’t think turning on the spigot is that easy.

It isn’t. But there are many schools across the mid major landscape with worse NIL situations than us that are 10x better. That has nothing to do with donors.

Good lord, help us all if they hire Matt Langel. We will continue to be a mediocre program with that guy. He’s fine. But we’ll never be a top tier ACC program.
Not Langel.

A big part of the next HC has to be the ability to draw in a ton of donations. We’ve heard it’s not a strength of Reds at the moment. This is also where I would worry Langel could struggle

Don’t believe Sam’s number is correct but Orange United does retain an administrative fee for their services and the way the contract is constructed, once fixed costs are recouped the percentage drops significantly. If you are concerned reach out to Orange United or the CAF and ask.

I would argue that to have instant success you need someone who brings NIL $ money with him like Fran.

I know people want to think that Fran motivated all these SU donors who were sitting by just waiting for the right coach to shower with millions, but that’s not how it works. Fran brought his own money tree that had enough IOUs on it to get his program kick started. I’m not sure how many are left on the tree. You aren’t the top recruiter in all of college football because you’re a loveable guy. It’s because you’re a dog with backers.

You accrue chits along the way for your shot. He got his shot and cashed in a lot. Now that the embers are lit, he’s got to build off that momentum.

I don’t want to bank on the next guy motivating donors. I want him to walk in with a bag full of sure things that in turn will motivate donors after success. The “belief without evidence” path is nearly impossible.

If Red doesn’t make it, I want a guy who’s a recruiting dog,who can put together a staff.

For the first several years of Weitsman's very public relationship with the hoops program, the primary way donations were funneled was to facilities.

By several accounts, Weitsman didn't donate a dime to SU athletics facilities. Well, other than to renovate a suite at the Dome that he used.

So, I have a hunch what his contribution to NIL would have been the past couple years. Lots of pics on Insta, precious little money.
Go read Bees email on how much he supported SU athletes. It was significant.

And the problem is Red brought nothing and is refusing to do what is required to attract, interact with, and secure funds from those who might otherwise give.
