Inside Syracuse basketball practice with Allen Griffin

Mike and Donna are doing a great job of pumping out content for a group that is starving for basketball news.

I'm halfway through the podcast and Griff just said Judah might be the best on-ball defender in the country.

Mike is a good interviewer. Griff was very forthcoming with opinions and details on the team. He is very high on all his centers and has special praise for Will's future.

Well worth a listen if you like SU hoops.

Agreed a very fun but candid interview. The name of today's game is being real across the board. It's great to see him be honest about everything including how it's not a walk in the park every day with a major change in responsibilities. It only helps to have multiple voices in the room which at times doesn't always mean agreement. Group think can be detrimental.

Prior to playing Zone 100% of the time, JB played zone on all inbounds under the basket. We will see plenty of Zone this year. I think early on, until the team settles, we will see more defensive breakdowns and need to expect that but with our length and consistent playing we will see our defense improve. Throwing 2 types of defenses at a team will be a big disruption to opposing offenses even if they have senior guards. We will force a lot of turnovers,.

I do have concerns on offence (due to lack of returning scorers) and think that we will implement a lot more mid range jump shooting in our arsenal, I think Bell and Taylor are fantastic in that aspect. This is a lost skill to most in college (and even in the pros). Very effective today due to the spacing of the defenses

Go Cuse.

Yes understood I was just having a little fun with it :)
Jim Carrey funny not funny.gif

Half court offense won't be the star here most likely anyways. The biggest thing will be the abundance of ball handlers and guys able to use the bounce to force the defense to help and open up shots and lobs or draw fouls.

Great interview. He’s so likable, relatable and candid in this interview. We’re fortunate to have the staff we do. He’s done such a good job despite the injuries our centers have suffered in the past. The development of a pretty raw Jesse who came to SU was remarkable, especially considering Frank Anselm was the 4 star more heralded recruit. Having the current multiple talented center options is something we haven’t had in decades and has hurt us immensely in the past because of center injuries during the season- Chukwu, Sidibe etc. Looking forward to watching our centers develop over the next few seasons. Sad to hear that Mounir Hima is continuing to deal with knee issues, Thankfully we have much more depth. Love his assessment of our talented guard situation and the versatility and talent he sees in MaliQ Brown too.

I can't wait to see Maliq in year 2. He is the quiet kid that hardly ever does anything wrong and is just always making positive plays being a menace as a defender, getting his hands on loose balls and rebounds, running the court or getting quick put backs. He gives an opponent very little - you have to earn it when playing against him that includes being a quiet soft spoken kid so you aren't rattling him either. He has that quiet confidence in him you just can't teach.

Griff said William Patterson is better than Jesse at the same stage. Let's hope that is true in 2-3 seasons still.
He believes he will be very very good. And I hope people can trust Griff now with the bigs. He’s made huge strides with guys and he works his butt off with them. Cheriehoop is right, we are fortunate to have an absolutely amazing staff from the people they are to how hard they work and all alumni is amazing too. They are hungry for success and I can’t wait for this season

Griff is a fantastic coach. No doubts here.

Yeah, but a menacing zone. I think throwing zone possessions in the mix will be deadly with this team. As long as it's not the primary defense and they don't play it for 40 minutes against the Colgate's of the world.
Absolutely. Zone is a great change of pace defense. I used to love watching the old Bob Huggins Cincinnati teams with the full court press 2-2-1 zone. It was aggressive and fun to watch. Mixing in the zone is a great way to slow a team down and make them think. The John Chaney matchup zone was always tough to play against too.

hmmm...yeah he has kinda been the forgotten man on the current roster and the center discussion this offesason on this board didn;t even seem to acknowledge his existence...but something told me he might be a surprise...

hopefully he can be a "diamond in the rough" find!

What’s strange though is William Patterson’s picture and bio are missing on SU’s roster. His name is there but not much else. Shy? :)

I noticed some of the women's players are missing information too...
