I was listening to a local sports radio show the other day, and the two hosts made an interesting bet. Will S.U. beat either Florida State, or Clemson, in the next five seasons?
I say, without hesitation...YES.
What say you...and why?

Although I am optimistic with regards to our program direction I don't even have to get cute with my justification about how we will improve.

Even if we have a 90% chance of losing each of those ten games we still only have a 35% chance of losing all ten.

So in an even money bet I take the 65% and give my opposition the 35% and let the chips fall where they may.

Disclosure: I think the 90% figure will end up being too high when these 5 years are played out but again I don't even need to get that cute when making this bet.

Clemson dropped off last year and I think they'll drop off a little bit more this year. It's hard to replace super stars.

Clemson has the best young QB in the nation DeShaun Watson who was hurt when we played them last year. Clemson has also had top 10 recruiting classes the last 3 years.

They won't drop off being a top 25 team as long as Watson is their QB. He is best ACC Heisman contender the next few years.

I don't see us beating FSU or Clemson in the next 2 years, but I think can maybe pull off an upset against 1 in the next 5 years.

He's gone after this one.

He was a true Freshman last year. When he can true Sophomore declare for the draft? He has a minimum of 2 more seasons unless Clarett v. NFL was overturned and I don't know.

Nag Watson has 2 years, he played as a true Freshman last year. IMO he will be even better then Boyd. Kids a stud. Plus Clemson is just in the reloading phase. They still have some stud WR's and return all of their top RB's but 1.

I can see FSU dropping off, but they were national champs, so don't see them falling too far out of the top 10, if that.

I actually think we have a better shot at a win this year than either of the next two just because I think rsSr QBs are so valuable. (If we stay healthy)

If the future QB position plays out the way it look like it might, I do believe our best shot in the next 5 years will be in years 4-5.

Mistakes were made with my previous post. He'll be gone in two. He is a great, great player.

You either need good talent or a coach who can maximize with what he has on his roster. Due to the fact I am not optimistic about our coaching staff and we only have lower half P5 talent I wouldn't touch this bet. Unless I was getting +200 or better.

2017.

A senior Franklin leading the defense/alongside Washington/Culpepper (or any of the '15 QB's)/Ish/Erv/Custis/Enoicy/Fredericks/Mo Neal etc. etc.

Assumptions about the future based on today's realities.

Actually I just came across this article in response to Clemson not dropping off from last year. The people who cover their program actually compare them favorably to the 2013 team, which is saying something.

They are kind of like us, where they are young, but their younger guys are more talented. The only problem is their young guys are all 4 and 5 star recruits

Number one isn't going to change unless we win. Number two is my opinion based on what I have seen. When you have gone 2 years and the offense has been pathetic and the only change to the offensive side is the QB coach becoming OC sorry I am not optimistic in this coach. SS bet on Lester I feel that is a dumb bet so I am not optimistic the coaching will be better to get better talent.

Has our recruiting been significantly better? I would say the ACC move and the states we can draw talent from have contributed to a slight uptick. SS is a better recruiter than DM but DM is a better game preparer by a country mile.

When you bet on sports you are making an assumption. Money isn't free and there are no surebets. This coaching staff has to show me before I will believe in them. 2013 looks more like an outlier year than 2014 IMO.

I cannot wait for you to be wrong.

I hope I am. I actually want to see good football from SU if we win I will be the first to give credit and say I am wrong. I am not one of these doom and gloomers who loves being miserable. I am just done giving the benefit of the doubt and will not spin or be optimistic because its my team.

We have shown nothing to feel optimistic about. SS has done a good job recruiting, but its not been great and I have no confidence in his offense being better than best case scenario mediocre.

FSU...no way. The talent level gap is just too big. Clemson...I would lean towards no, but if we catch them on an off day (like last year) we can hang around and then anything is possible.

I would have to take the NO side of this best.

No you're very consistent in this. You have not been optimistic about anything (as you said) - but watch out for USF! They get the benefit of the doubt.

Newsflash to TheCusian when you bring in talent you have reason for optimism. USF has brought in 8 4 star talents the last 3 years that is more than SU has.

Talent matters especially when the coaching isn't great. USF has brought in more talent than we have and they are at home. Sorry that makes sense when you don't live in a bubble with rainbows and unicorns. I know what I am talking about and don't just take the pro-SU optimism spin.

Just curious as to what site you are looking at? Unless I'm misreading both sites, 247 has them with three 4 stars in the past four seasons while Skowt has them with five over the past 4 seasons.

Now none of the above is meant to say we will beat them this year, we are only 2-6 against them overall. But both wins took place in Tampa. So it being played there isn't much of a factor to me.

Cheers,
Neil

Jumbo has got major discipline problems and his kids are not taking it seruously

They have lost 1 game in 2 seasons. I don't think they are too worried down there about the program's health and kids not taking things seriously. They must be doing something right and they are taking it serious enough. The results speak for themselves

10 wins in three season vs 10 in two for us vs a vastly superior schedule and conference.

Your confidence in Taggert belies your bias against Shafer. No other way to read it.
