Rumor floating around that Shaka Smart turned down Illinois because he will be going to UConn when Calhoun steps down (this year or next). Lots of folks feel it will be this year.

seems foolish, I almost think that Illinois may be a better spot with the big east becoming Conference USA and hopefully sucking for all eternity.

This would be a shocking development. How can UConn not have anyone from their tree ready to take over? Calhoun is UConn Basketball. Their style is him. Losing him would be a huge blow in and of itself, but to lose him and have to go outside the UConn ranks to get another coach would really set the program back. Look at places like Arizona. They have never been the same since Lute left. Calhoun will take the identity of the program with him.

Not sure UConn would pay what Shaka wants; Calhoun is gonna make a push for Ollie and if they say no that could mean an extremely ugly end to Calhoun's relationship with UConn. Warde Manuel has to absolutely nail it on this hire, I still think it will be Ollie/a program guy.

Calhoun is tough enough and mean enough (and I mean that as a compliment) that I could see him telling all of his guys to bail if he doesn't get to select his successor, and leave the cupboard totally bare for whoever is foolish enough to try and follow him without his blessing.

Shaka has turned down NC State, Maryland and now Illinois if true...he has to like it at VCU quite a bit or has a certain school in mind because those are all pretty nice basketball schools
