that are here now take weight training to new levels before they come on campus. These kids are so ripped coming in that they are looking to be more physically mature than Srs. of a decade ago and moving forward.

Sure we had some freshmen coming looking ready to play, but damn just look at this years and last years class.

Things look promising going forward......dedication is what I am seeing

Think we've moved past recruiting guys that will need 2 years to be physically ready to compete. If a lot of these guys get the playbook and scheme down there is every reason to believe they'll get early playing time.

Great point. I can really tell that several are taking the workout program we give them very seriously before they arrive. That's awesome if we can start getting 4 years of solid contribution from some of them.

I think the high schools are building up their S&C programs the way the colleges did in the previous generation. But I still think the jump to the college level is a higher jump if you're on the line of scrimmage than it is at other positions. I've always hated the term "skill position", since it excludes the area of the team that requires the biggest adjustment.

It's hard for me to get excited about observations like these. This type of thing is only an advantage if it's not occurring at other programs, which I cannot confirm or deny.

It is happening and every single other school. So I don't get all that excited about it either (beach pictures notwithstanding).

I think we're all really still underestimating how good our defense will be in the coming years. The kids coming in are absolute freaks of nature.

Hulk is that you?

It's amazing that we've cornered the market on under-the-radar freaks of nature that somehow fail to impress the rating services.

If we could only bottle this summer optimism and save it for November.

I both understand and appreciate your tempered expectations.

But having followed "this" board for ten years now, summer optimism > summer pessimism.

If there are reasons to think positive, no matter how seemingly trivial, I can appreciate that as an Orange fan.

Grown men posting shirtless pictures of 17 year olds is NOT CREEPY AT ALL!

I know you've beat this drum for awhile now - so for the record - the kid put the picture of himself up on twitter and a woman posted the picture on the syracusefan recruiting board.

that said, it's amusing that you, milly and chip always comment on these photos. hmmm. :)

I think Shafer & his staff are more in tune and experienced with recruiting than Marrone ever was. Shafer & his staff understand how to evaluate and get athletes 1) on campus for visits and 2) commit to the program and the process. Case in point - the incoming class has had to report back to coaches each week with their weight training progress. I never heard anything like that kind of management from Marrone. I believe the players from last year and this years class are more prepared and better athletes than what we have seen in a few years...good news for the young guys that need to step it up and deliver.

Are those schools also increasing their freshman readiness year over year? I see reason for optimism because we are probably catching up to what other schools have been doing for a while. That translates as a relative advantage for us. At worst, we're not starting in a hole relative to peer.

I know this - I'd rather hear these stories than not. Control the controllables ;).
