McFarlane had a long run on a fake punt previously. Like 60 yards or so (maybe last year?). To your point though, just another tip off to make the fake so obvious.

To actually answer the question I believe he usually is one of the back 3 protectors on punts.

As for the call...wow it was so expected and a terrible call to say the least. My guess is that Shafer has more faith in the punt team getting 4 yards than his offense.
