I don't watch aau ball, all I know at this point is school basketball (it's only mod a for my son and he'd rather just go to the batting cage over and over with his baseball team than bother with any other sport)

So I'm detached from it and not really that invested in it although I would rather see the kid play more sports in high school and forget about college baseball

But what I observe is absolute trash

The dad coaches on weekends aren't going to start wars over selfish plays, the mod and jv coaches tread very lightly, no one can keep a good book. I don't blame anyone. No one has enough court time to work on motion

So teams work on a couple plays, the kids are too stupid to learn them, the coaches get frustrated and call for motion which they've never practiced and the kids will not cut because they prefer to just stand there and get the ball back

It's this nonsense battle of wills to get to the hoop. If you turn it over ten times and make one circus shot, you celebrate with your family like a crazy person. It's not even necessary selfishness, it's just what kids think the game is

Every year I hope it gets smarter and every year it's just more and more I-got-this-ball

I love the NBA despite the idiotic rule book because of how the ball gets whipped around

Long winded. But Syracuse looks like a bunch of guys taking turns as the I got this guy

My sample is small, maybe it's different in other places. Maybe what I'm seeing isn't relevant to this

Just on cue is starling making the worst pass in the world. None of these kids know how to pass the ball even when they want to

AAU ball is far better than school ball so I’m not sure you can really blame coaching at those levels. If you’re anywhere near decent at basketball you’re in AAU by the third grade and the coaching there is better. By the time you get to HS it evens out anyways as you generally have better coaches at top programs.

Long way of saying I don’t think this is a youth sports issue. This is a distinctly issue with our coaching.

There are some really bad aau teams, this much I know. Kids who are really bad are playing it, I couldn't believe it when I heard some of these school players play aau . As stupid as travel baseball is, I'm glad it prevents me from going to aau tournaments

Our problem is we have a coach that can’t correct the issues imbedded into players during AAU. Good coaches correct bad behaviors and fundamentals. We don’t have that.
Please don't take this as a defense of autry

He's terrible and I've thought he should be fired pretty much immediately

College basketball is pretty bad. We might be extreme in our stupidity but i didn't really enjoy turning on many games these days

It's not impacting SU success but AAU culture is definitely hurting American basketball.
The biggest problem is they play too many AAU games that they don’t really care about the result of, so it becomes streetball to some extent. Half my kids high school team played on his AAU team, and they just didn’t care as much about losing those games as they did losing high school games.

But it all comes down to coaching. my son had better AAU coaches than his freshman or JV high school coaches. The key is having a coach that sets strict parameters about what’s acceptable and what’s not acceptable based on your skill set. Like the last game when Red sat Souare for the 3. It’s easy to discipline your 10th man. It’s not so easy to discipline your best players. That’s one of the areas Red is failing.

I believe it’s the culture of “accepting losing”, and accepting losing behavior and performance, whether it’s from your AAU coaches or high school coaches, that is the biggest problem.
