It's not in this clip but it was reported that's what Jim said walking away from the presser. It's a good title for a very concise and to the point summary of the strategy of the game and what happened.

the one thing I would take issue with would be the downplaying of the turnovers. We couldn't overcome 1) -15 in points off turnovers, 2) -16 at the line and 3) Cole going 0 for 5 from the arc.

he’s not wrong that we just “missed shots” and we got good looks.

I think he’s ignoring the fact, specifically Cole, that a lot of our shots were SHORT. We had no legs.

Bingo. Cole had nothing in the tank. Jimmy went from running in cement to running in a tar pit as he tired.

VT spent the game trying to make the zone move as much as possible and put a lot of pressure on the wings. It was too much.

Last paragraph says it ALL!!!

we got good looks(from 3)- just couldn't make the shots.
OK...how many teams shoot 50% or better for the season?
Point being if you need to make 3s consistently/abundantly
you're going to come up empty. OFTEN.

If you are getting good looks, shouldn’t you expect to make a reasonable percent of them? To me 33.3% or higher would be a reasonable percentage. That percentage from 3 yields the same number of points as shooting 50% from inside the arc on the same number of shots.

We forced 4 turnovers . When that happens, you’re not going to win with this team. It’s only chance is to reduce the number of chances the opposition has

I agree with JB’s strategy of limiting threes and fanning out to shooters and not stressing about the high post. That was the right call on the defensive strategy against Va Tech. He’s also right to complain about the foul disparity. That was and continues to be sickening. They were clutching and grabbing out on the perimeter all day and hacking in the lane. But I agree that JB shouldn’t minimize the turnover issues (that really hurt us), and I don’t love his reliance on isolation over passing and movement. We shouldn’t rely solely on isolation and backing guys down. We need more variety on offense.

That was a great presser. He even went into detail what the defensive and offensive strategies were.
His last couple of pressers, since taking responsibility for coaching being part of the issue, have been much better. Noticeably, the player bashing has also stopped.

The details of the strategies on O and D were a welcome change and made sense.

we shot 37% and lost by 12?

Iso is a big part of the offense, but JB is also running a screening motion offense, pick and roll (w Jesse), set plays off of the attempted double high screens, curls off down screens, and running shooters off of baseline screens

The problem is when this team is playing against teams that can hard pressure the ball and double on ball screens the screening part of the offense becomes ineffective and degrades into the iso desperation at the end of the shot clock. So, it might look like that iso is all that is being attempted. It's not. But, this is going to be intensified now that JE is out - everyone is going to hard hedge/double on ball screens.

He also made two comments in the vt press conference about the foul shot imbalance 4-21. It seems unusual that free throws would be so out of balance but coaches are generally discouraged from commenting on officiating, right?. Were his comments enough to merit a fine?

well hes wrong about something

that iso is the best way for them to score

its just not

im very curious on what basis he thinks that is the case

The other issue, of course, is our screening stinks

The good teams find ways to win when things aren’t going the way you want, or plan them to go. We’ve seen it plenty of times in our history. That’s called margin for error, and it’s a function of adaptability, depth, and simple talent/ability. We don’t have enough of all, and the record backs it up. How it is this year.

Lost at the line
we didn't outboard them...
we had 9 assists///11 turnovers and 2 steals
they had 20 assists// 4 turnovers and 6 steals

geez...home cooking...at Blacksburg?? shocking...

He can cry about it all he wants but this is what happens to jump shooting teams. We don’t “get to the basket”. We flail into the lane and shoot fadeaways. Why would refs reward that?

JB was at a loss for words he couldn’t blame his whipping boy Jesse for the loss. He almost gave him a complement while he was out?

I mean ….always. And the 9 assists stuff is garbage. The ball sticks with his kids and that’s why our assist numbers stink. We have at times
Played well with good assist numbers. In fact early in the year I’m pretty sure he made a comment after a game of 25 assists or so that this is what happens with jump shooting teams.

If anything we benefit when the refs “let them play” when Buddy tries to get in the lane. He isn’t athletic enough to get guys on his hip so tries to muscle to his spot and gets away with that off arm extending or throwing his body into guys quite a bit.

Buddy is 12th in the ACC for assists per game. That’s not really bad at all.
