We are playing down to our recruiting rankings . We are consistently down at the bottom of the acc rankings with an occasional blip to maybe 8th and it shows. These so called great camp offers are just not great . The two and 3 star recruits who would be 4 and 5 star recruits if signed with Alabama are simply not.

I know the ripping on Devito is good for the soul. But let's not forget the team had tremendous momentum after that last touchdown yesterday . They had three timeouts and a home crowd to help. What happened ? I team that had problems running all year with a supposed meathead coach lined up and played smashmouth slobber knocker football and ran over around and through our defense like butter to keep the football and win. The vaunted defense got run over .

There are just not enough good players on the offense or defense to play a long season. I know we won ten games last year and I think we may do it again sometime but when you recruit low consistently and you done luck out with a Dungey or a slayton you get what you get.

Agree about the need to recruit better — Pitt has better players in its OL, as they proved by running the ball when needed in that long drive. In perspective, though, SU with its reserve QB, and less than stellar recruiting, won the second half 14 - 3 and made it a game.

What we are lacking is a better dual threat QB, and two good OTs.

This team has no quality depth across the board. Outside of maybe running back there is no depth at all.

The recruiting needs to get better and get better quick and he needs to recruit a couple quarterbacks or in a year or two this is going to get real ugly real fast.

Dino has never had to win with his recruits. This is new territory for him.

Let's start the stars don't matter debate again...lol Just kidding...PLEASE don't...I'll get banned again.

Look I know our recruits haven’t been top 30 even yet. The problem I see is how and when we use these guys and how do we build depth without playing anyone but starters. Richards being my number 1 but also Cam Jordan should be out there somewhere. We do not let guys play in games that could get experience. This staff is killing me with this. Why. As another member said we had Harper buried on d line way down and he gets some time and does really well. Shy last year. Dino talks about our lb and says we are gonna play quit a few of them but then we don’t other than Jones and we suck at lb. if they were kicking ars then ok but they aren’t. I do know if we recruit at a higher level we could do this but we have kids we can win with if they ever get allowed on the field. I always want us to recruit better and we need a new oline guy who can teach kids great technique but also get them to grow every year as a football player. He also needs to be able to recruit these kids as well.

Basing anything on the "Science of RECRUITING RANKINGS" is mind-boggling.

As is the recommendation that "SU needs to recruit better".

Do you need better defined? Okie Dokie...

WR...taller bigger bodies that can block on the outside and box out a DBf
OL...Guys who have enough gray matter to remember the snap count/assignments
QB...Ability to improvise/game IQ

CUSE is a tough place to recruit quality athletes to and look at all the 4 and 5-stars that JB is missing out on. Personally I love upstate NY but you can’t compare it to better climate places that exist in many ACC and SEC towns. Penn St. is a different animal for they have a first class football program in place and we will never reach where they are.

Look at our records over the past 20 years and this year seems as much about regression to the mean as anything. Last year was a blip until proven otherwise. Ugh.

Pyle, you are aware, I trust, that there are other schools all competing for the same biggest, fastest, smartest, players.

You aren't suggesting, I hope, that the SU staff is ignoring bigger, faster and smarter as attributes?

There isn't an Amazon for players. You can only get those who want to come to your school.

And recruiting is a crap shoot. Who knew Dungey was going to be that effective? (No one in the Pacific Northwest apparently)

You don't think there's a fairly strong correlation between your recruiting class ranking and your likelihood of winning your conference, going to the playoff, etc.?

Dino’s made it obvious in his interviews. He’s not satisfied on the O side of the ball with our player development. I thought it was all recruiting too, but seeing our OL and receivers, I think Dino’s telling us without telling us here. Hope changes are made to the staff in accordance if no improvement’s made.

I think we've got good depth in the defensive backfield and in the receiving corps, (which I think we'll see as we use more of the younger guys in the next couple of years). We certainly need a lot more good players in the lines and at linebacker.

You know that ESPN segment called C'mon man? Well C'mon man! Of course I realize we are competing with other schools, and no I don't think we are ignoring bigger, faster, and smarter. Amazon for players is cute. It's the coaches job to get them to want to come here. You are aware of that I trust. If we are losing out on recruits to all of those other schools you mentioned, then you need to get some staff in here that doesn't lose out on those recruits. I mean sorry but your whole aww shucks attitude towards the players we get doesn't cut it with me. McFit was able to guys like Ish to come here, why can't Dino and crew do the same? Dino needs to stop employing all his buddies and get some guys with proven recruiting chops and can coach their assigned position.

No doubt, I agree that the staff isn't "ignoring" those attributes you suggest. And, yes, every now and again, you find that "diamond in the ruff" so to speak a la Dungey. He's not the first, and certainly won't be the last. I think recruiting can be a crap shoot, but I don't necessarily agree that it's the rule. Otherwise, why is it year in and year out the teams with these top "science of recruiting rankings" classes seemingly are typically top 10-15 teams annually. No, it's not an exact science, but it's not a 100% crap shoot as you're suggesting either, especially with all the footage, etc. that is available on these guys. There is clearly a causal relationship relative to success. Otherwise, why has Dino stated at times that our recruiting needs to be upgraded? I believe he's referring to high 3 stars and several 4 stars, maybe an occasional 5 to boot. There's no doubt in my mind he would much rather land those types than the consistent 2 and 3's he's getting.

On an aside, the same can be said about hoops. Our recruiting has been down there too, and is 100% causally related to our record in ACC play and overall the past 5 years. Another poster suggested in one of those hoops threads how in the past if SU had a class of 5 guys coming in, typically it would've landed us somewhere in the top 10 classes. This years crop of cinco landed us in or around top 25-30. We will see how things turn out, but it certainly matters...at least in my view.

If you want to say Syracuse football has an image problem that affects recruiting that is completely fair game. But for the sake of the children don't you dare bring basketball failures into this equation. Basketball has its own problems with recruiting but those issues are more correctable when the AD gets to the point of making changes.

Interesting choice of words, first class, considering the institution's not so distant past...though you got the "animal" part correct.
