I've got it all figured out. And I continue...

When I win the lottery, I will be endowing the Football HC Chair with $60 million. With an annual drawdown at 5%, that provides $3 million per year to help fund our football coaching staffs' salaries.

My caveat would be that Syracuse MUST come up with another $4.5 million annually, so we would have $7.5 million annually to divy out amongst the football staff. If not, they can find another benefactor and I'll take my dough elsewhere.

Here's the rough breakdown:

$4 million - HC
$750k - OC (we should have an electric offense, we play in an Dome; get a gunslinging recruiter to run this O)
$750k - DC (if we could keep our current defensive schemes in place with a better offense, we would be fine)
$500k - STC (well, well, well... enough said here; we need the Harrison/Spotwood days to return)
$250k - 6 assistants (each should have a sound footprint in 4 key recruiting grounds [NY/PA, NJ x2, GA, FL x2])

If I'm going to commit big, they're going to step up and commit to putting this program back on the national level. Without a large infusion of cash and a commitment from this administration, we will always be, AT BEST, 2nd or 3rd fiddle in the ACC.

And I digress...

what about money for facilities and paying blue chip recruits?

What so you think our staff makes now? I'm guessing $250K for coordinators and maybe $100-125 for position coaches.

Let's make it much simpler.

Worked for Clemson.

Those will be taken care of when I win.

What he said.

If Syracuse had someone come to them with a massive gift directly related to the football program, they better always keep up with what we need.

The SUAD staff is currently calculating how many game-worn jerseys they need to auction to get to that annual 4.5 million. Looks like the xc, m. soccer and field hockey teams will be signing a lot of posters over the Thanksgiving break.

As great as it would be winning the lottery, this is unlikely; however, this IS what needs to happen for this football program.

Syracuse U is never going to pony up enough money to make this happen on their own, so we need a massive donor(s) to step up.

Was hoping Al Davis would pony up some, but that never came to fruition (could be wrong).

That's pretty much what has to happen at most schools or be a state school. Academic institutions just don't pony up much of their own money for athletic facilities.

If those are our numbers, no wonder our staff looks like a MAC school's.

I'm going to guess that your guess is too low.

Exactly, which in turn, blows for the private schools.

I have heard that booster clubs actually contribute to coaches salaries at some schools. Is this really true?

Yes it is. Especially when the salaries are at the top end like $4m+.

What really amazes me is that coaches make so much to begin with regardless of the outcome. I know that GOOD coaches who get results bring in the dough for their institutions but that is not too many data points in the total pool of coaches. The rest of the coaches are skating by on potential.

As I get off my soapbox I'll agree that whatever it takes to improve, yes, do it.

What is really amazing to me with regard to coaches and salaries is that at a lot of universities, the coaching positions themselves are endowed by boosters. At Stanford I am pretty sure that every coaching position is endowed by a booster, even the S&C coach. http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-...coaches-make-winning-teams-not-just-luck.html

Didn't know that some schools went that far. That article that MSOrange linked yesterday was also eye opening. Why is it so hard for SU to fundraise and have big boosters? I know we are a private school and not a huge school but still.

I think that is one of the things Syverud is trying to fix. Right now everyone at SU is on their own, and there is little collaboration, so schools and other programs end up competing against each other. It's one of the reasons why the academic facilities at SU are not equal, and I would guess that the appointment of Wishart to Athletics is to address concerns in that area.

Hope so.

Not sure if it is a lack of priority or what, but Syracuse needs to wake up on that end. Having a good football program would bring in all sorts of added revenue into the school I would imagine.
