Ivy League cancels all winter sports...

I bet he doesn't unless Buddy transfer somewhere. And I don't see that happening.
Agreed. There is a reason Jimmy went to Cornell. And it's great that he was able to excel there. Hope he stays to play another there next year. Why leave college?

I think think there is a chance he transfers. Just not here.

Good.

At least a small minority of universities has its priorities in order.

why get upset if they play the sports.. as time has gone on we are finding almost none of the issues of players getting sick have anything to do with the sport or practice or playing.. everything has pretty much been off the field mistakes. now if you suppose teams have an extra 20-30 million around to cover the costs of not playing they should just not play..

I think its also a function that it doesnt cost them nearly as much to have the kids not play.

AND - most of them have massive endowments, such that they can easily get by without whatever revenue sports would generate.

Harvard & Yale could literally allow every student to attend for FREE, if they wanted to.
The dividends and interest on their endowments are more than the total of tuition for all students.
But of course they don’t.

I dont think its quite as much as that though.. they dont make a billion every yr in interest that they could throw at it.. but a couple basically are free right now..

Unless he takes the Spring semester off and doesn't graduate, he can't play there next year because the Ivies don't allow graduate students to play. Plus, they don't allow redshirts for any reason, including injuries. As a graduate transfer, he'll be able to transfer anywhere and could play immediately even under the old transfer rules.

One thing to keep in mind about any school's endowment, the donated money usually has strings attached that require that it be spent on a specific purpose. Money that's been donated to fund a professorship can't be diverted to financial aid or to open a special rare books collection.

The Ivies do throw scholarship money round quite liberally, even to families making $100-200K. About the only athletes who paid the full freight were the Rockefeller brothers (Nelson's sons) who played football for Princeton some years ago.

Kids want to play. I think is disingenuous to say adults are to blame if kids really want to play. I would feel the exact same way if I had eligibility in HS or College. This is where I agree lockdowns are hurting people’s mental health.

That is the rule as of now. I suspect that the ivies may pass a rule to allow sr's that didn't get a season because of the virus be allowed to play next year.

Gotta start that earning clock as soon as possible!!

Or does that only apply to certain players?

Thank you. It has always puzzled me that so many people don't have any idea that endowments are restricted gifts. Also, I believe it is common for endowments to be invested and only the interest is available to be spent.

Yes. The investment keeps them operating over time rather than having it become a one-time gift. All non-profits must spend X% per year of the interest on the invested money or it becomes subject to taxation.
