Jackson Meeks: Lions

They just traded Tim Patrick 😂 but honestly they should’ve done that before the cuts. I just hope the Lions don’t get Jackson Meeks — they don’t deserve him.

I hope he goes to the Seahawks .
Such a Jags move. They could have picked up Meeks and kept the sixth round pick

I don't think so. They, like most teams, were playing roster roulette yesterday.

Plus, Patrick fills a specific role--a bigger WR who can block. Most teams like to have one of those guys.

What I'm wondering is, if Meeks goes back to Detroit, will he be their 5th WR? I'd prefer to see him somewhere else b/c they have that TeSlaa guy who is similar in style to Meeks and who is clearly preferred by the Lions.

Well, Raiders could have picked up DeVito for a backup QB just the same. Why trade an asset when you can claim an equivalent? I suppose the real issue is the delay in waiver claims. The Raiders have their guy in hand already reviewing the playbook. If needed this week, the extra few days is probably important.

I feel for the kid a little. He must be thinking, "what more can I do?!" He had about as good of a preseason as a rookie WR could have, and it wasn't good enough to make a roster. Nfl is wild.

I see it a little differently.

He DID everything he could do with his opportunity, and it parlayed into him making the team. Being on the practice squad means his foot's in the door for the NFL, with the Lions or potentially another team that signs him off of the practice squad.

He began this process as an UDFA. This is a good outcome. Needs to continue to show his stuff, and he'll be good.

He's got the talent, the size, and the skills.

I agree. On the PS, he is one injury away from PT. What are the odds that none of the WR suffer an injury?

Guys get hurt a lot. He will get a chance. It’s incredibly rare to be a UDFA and make a 53 right away. The rosters are so small.

I can also see where a WR that can return punts or kicks (or otherwise thrive on special teams) has more value than a WR that is great at catching the ball.
And let’s not forget the DBs he went against in preseason games were not exactly Deion, Ronnie Lott, Charles Woodson and Jack Tatum.

The Lions DBs were all better and none of us watched film of his practices.

Yup. And his agent did a good job getting him a very solid signing bonus for a UDFA.

I didn’t realize practice squads are that big, I knew they were expanded several years ago, but 15? Cool

No it’s not.

It’s weird to have a 4th QB.

The 3rd is usually on the practice squad.
By weird, I meant a lost opportunity. QB is such an important position, why not have 3 QBS on the 53 and 1 more on the PS for development. I think I would also have a PS QB that does not play the same way as the starting QBs. If you have pro-style QBS, get a more mobile QB for the PS to be able to replicate that... and vice-versa.

To me, the NFL has always been a league of followers. If everyone says some DL should be the #1 pick... that ends up being the #1 pick. No matter how much it sets a team like the Bengals back...

Because even though they've expanded, practice squads are still very limited, and you're far more likely to need a 7th defensive tackle during the season than you are a 4th QB.

Development isn't that important when you can get one in the draft every year or grab one in free agency. There are too many injures at other positions to waste a spot on the 53 on a guy that has a miniscule chance at seeing te field.
