Well, we've finally made it! After a long off-season we are less than a week away from the first Syracuse lacrosse game of the season. Expectations have been building for this team, and they've reached a fever pitch. After finishing 4-10 just a few seasons ago, they are now preseason #2. They still have a lot to prove as this highly regarded 2020 recruiting class goes from under, to upper classmen. They start the season of course, against the Dolphins of Jacksonville, and Syracuse legend John Galloway.

I have to be honest and say I am not that familiar with Jacksonville this season. Galloway has put together some good teams for a while now, but can't quite seem to get over the hump and into the playoffs. He still has been able to notch some pretty big upsets in his career, and isn't afraid to schedule "the big boys" early in the season. According to Gait's press conference, it sounds like they wanted to schedule the Dolphins a few season ago, but Galloway finally felt "ready" to travel to the Dome this year. I'm guessing that means he is confident in his team. They are led on offense by Jackson Intrieri (39,29). He's got some size on him (6'2, 185), so it should be interesting to see who the Orange match him up with. I am going to guess Billy Dwan, as it doesn't look like the Dolphins have a bigger attackman. Jacksonville will be without Jacob Greiner (45, 31), who led the team in scoring last year, but they do return four of their next five leading scorers including Nicky Brown and Jack Taylor, who combined for 100 points last year.

Jacksonville will have to replace their FOGO from last year, Nathan Kapp, who finished at 58% last year. So on paper at least, hopefully Syracuse will have an edge here. Jacksonville does return their goalie Ryan Della Rocco, who put up good numbers last year with a 58% save percentage. The Dolphins don't seem to be coming into this season with a lot of hype (no high profile transfers like the last few years), so they might be flying under the radar. They did apparently lose pretty convincingly in a scrimmage against Rutgers, but hard to put much stock into scrimmage results. I do think Syracuse will win this game, the spread here is -7.5 which might be reasonable. Given the expectations for the Orange this year, I think they need to beat a team like Jacksonville pretty convincingly.

Obviously, first game of the season is exciting as we finally get to see who is playing where, and which players won position battles. It sounds like Finn Thomson will be the third attackman, but there are still some depth chart questions. Most importantly is goalie, which many of us have assumed is Jimmy McCool, but nothing has been made official yet. Also it's still a mystery where Mike Grace is lining up, and who will be running LSM. I am sure there will be some players getting time that we aren't expecting. Given the first two games are against Jacksonville and Vermont, hopefully the bulk of roster shuffling will be settled by the Towson game.

Well, wrapping things up, just want to say I'm thankful for this community. Lacrosse is an extremely fun sport with small but passionate fanbase. It's really great to be able to come here with likeminded people to banter about a really exciting game that, quite frankly, not enough people appreciate. On top of that it's great to be a part of the best and most knowledgeable fan base in the country. Hopefully there are good things on deck for the Orange this season. GO 'CUSE!

i am not gary gait (surprise!) so my word is not official however mccool has been atop the depth chart for months...if he's not in net this weekend then it would mean he got hurt

orange should win this one convincingly, 7.5 spread seems about right but wouldnt be surprised if cuse wins by double digits...jax is going to struggle on faceoffs without kapp and if orange control possession i dont really see how the 'fins keep it close.

Spallina - Hiltz - Thomson

Dwan - Figgy - Grace

Caccamo LSM

Rice / Levine / Jake Spallina

Slippin Jimmy McCool.

Caccamo starting at LSM would be interesting. Not sure that he could hold that spot all yea though. We also gotta get Ric to try and stay focused on lax, good lord that interview was all over the map.

Infante and Paulie not getting him on track is a terrible job. Their show is such a joke.

I really like Steve on TV with the local sports, but just don’t think he’s great at this stuff

I’m not sure I see it, but people wiser than me have only good things to say about him there this offseason. I really am dumbfounded how Scott is not in the mix or getting any press. He was so highly rated coming in. Hoping that injury didn’t completely knock him off course as it can sometimes.

Caccamo has always been a strong cover for 1v1 defense. Curious how he will do on the faceoff wing and in transition, but if we are looking for someone to replace Olexo's strength in 1v1 defense he is the guy. I have a feeling Scott will be in the mix at backup LSM.

Gotta be honest, as long as Kol isn’t factoring in much we have a real chance to have an elite defense. I hate picking on kids, but it was clear he was a major weak link last year. SSDMs weren’t great , but your SSDMs are gonna get beat a lot when you play the kind of schedule we do. What we can’t afford is guys falling asleep and giving up off ball goals. That was a Kol specialty last year.

Well let's be fair Kol did have some really good games as well. He matches up very well with crease type attackmen but as you noted can struggle off ball especially with more active type attackmen. I don't see him playing a large role this season but he can certainly play a big role against certain teams/matchups.

Scott is playing well from what I have been told. He should get some opportunity to play.

Caccamo has had one of the more interesting careers for an SU defender that I can remember. His first year he was the best defender on the team and averaged two caused turnovers a game (he was a master at picking off passes). Then with new additions and injuries he gets moved to backup LSM and I think did fine, all things considered. Second on the team in caused turnovers with 17.

Then last year he's the forgotten man, sometimes filling in on close defense when Kol struggled. He struggled a bit last year with more physical attackmen, so perhaps playing LSM will be a boost for him. Not a threat in transition, but Grace and Dwan have that covered from a long stick perspective. I'm fine with him getting the first bite at the apple.

Curious about Scott as well. Also curious if Oderina does his full scale swap on defense for man-down situations like he did last year. I wasn't a fan of it, but might be an opportunity for a player like Scott to get his feet wet. Syracuse defense will have players on the bench like Dylan Sageder and Jordan Beck who have gotten playing time in the past. Not to mention guys like Scott, Dillon Stephens, Chuck Kucynski and Vincent Bologino who came in pretty highly regarded. I'm guessing they do it again.

Personally I would vote for a more limited version of what they did last year on man down. Maybe sub a couple guys, but come on, do we really want Dwan and Figueras off the field? Along with them being out for the man down period, they are still on the bench when the penalty expires. There is plenty of time for the other team to score in 6 on 6 after a 30 second penalty runs out. If they can reset the shot clock after the goalie deflects one then you have even longer out there with bench players. The unit was solid last year, and better than our last year under petro considerably, but the total change is still a little much IMO. At least 3 of the 5 "junkyard dogs" have graduated or moved on as well (Fratterigo/Titus/Drago). Maybe we keep Beck and Sageder but replace those other 3 with starters or barely on the bench guys, not guys who never see the field otherwise.
