James Vollono (ST coordinator)

Yeah I mean how many “near blocks” were there too? Like 12? They almost blocked first punt and there were so many others throughout the year that were so close. Sorry but you have a job to do and he didn’t do it at all let alone well
Let’s not forget 2 costly penalties on onside kicks. We’ve seen it all this year. I could probably do as good of a job just watching YouTube videos on how to line those guys up. And I have young kids too.

Fran was livid with the two point call to open the game.

I think stonehouse also wanted to fire vollano after the blocked punt. Never seen a punter so ticked off with coverage assignments coming off the field. It’s just poorly designed. Three guys had a look at McDonald and blew him up. It’s just broken.

With how much Fran preaches accountability there’s no way he doesn’t upgrade this position. He didn’t get the job done. It’s the nature of the business. He could get reassigned if he’s valuable in other ways or he moves on. No shame in that.
What was with the two point attempt. What the heck was anyone thinking. Also i would think that the head coach would have the final say on that

He is the Sterlin Gilbert of STs coaches.

It's was only a matter of time before someone brought this up here...

I can only remember 2 years that SU had truly bad special teams - the year Dino thought he could get by without a ST coordinator, and 2024. And this year was the worst!

If Fran has aspirations of making the CFP, we need top ST's. Sorry, but Vollono was given many chances, and he isn't the answer.

I know Fran doesn't want to fire anyone, so maybe he can be moved to some kind of analyst/helper role. He certainly shouldn't have anything to do w/ STs!

Brady Denaburg wasn't the cause screwing up on-sides kicks or punts getting blocked. With some good coaching, Denaburg should have been able to improve his FG accuracy. But he seriously regressed.

What went right under Vollono? Because I'm not seeing anything. We had the worst ST in the ACC, maybe in all of D1.

Just about everyone in coaching gets fired at some point. dArt => Accountability.
I think Denaburg’s field goal accuracy problem is his own Issue. He wasn’t great last year and has been around long enough that this just might be what he is capable of.

It will be interesting to see how things shake out on Defense as well. Erob I think is totally safe but gotta believe maybe bring in a consultant to like a Coach P or someone?
Who else on the D side has experience calling games

I may be totally off base with this, but I suspect as a first time head coach, HCFB wanted to wait until the offseason so he could really focus on any changes to his staff. Even those that are very obviously needed, like this one.

Hopefully as he gets more comfortable as a head coach, he'll be a little more proactive with these kind of things.

Or I may be completely wrong.
I don't think we will ever see Fran fire a coach mid-season unless it is for misconduct. He realizes that other than cover his own arse it doesn't do the program any good.

Kids got a cannon unfortunately he doesn't have the accuracy. Dino had this strange obsession with getting him the all-time SU long field goal record and might have crushed his confidence in the process.

HOMER CHAPTER 7, right after time management.

I think we tried the ‘swinging gate’ formation on the first PAT. This was something Coach P did for years.

If the opposing team does not defend it correctly, the kicking team is supposed to check into a play and go for two. When Coach P ran it, they almost never went for 2. I think the while point was just to add something the opposing team had to do to prepare for playing Syracuse. Make them burn valuable practice time to ensure they did not give SU an easy 2 point conversion.

You aren’t supposed to go for 2 unless you are absolutely sure you can get it. I think our players were not well coached on making the read and tried it when they shouldn’t have. And missed making it pretty badly.

Very much in keeping with everything this ST coach did. I wish him and his family well in the future. Seemed like a good guy.

I think this starte under Mac. We did it at WG and successfully did it several times in 88

I would think so but the way he was acting he wasn’t pleased they didn’t kick it. Maybe he thought the decision the player made was wrong but he was fired up. Granted he gets fired up a lot so not unusual hah.

Holy Cross-3 missed FGs

UNLV-One punt blocked and returned for a TD, one punt attempt Stonehouse had to eat and run to avoid a jail break

Wazzu-Punt blocked and returned for a TD
Holy Cross: djorange1989 loses $100 because we couldn’t make even one of those three FGs. Fire everyone!

Didn’t we also have an extra point or two blocked?

The first time I saw it was the Dallas Cowboys under Tom Landry.

And Dan Mullen was on campus.

I don’t believe he should be retained by any means but any one who blames the coach for missed fgs, a botched snap or punt off the side of the punter foot is the coaches fault, needs to re-evaluate and understand how coaching works.

I’m positive that they put someone in the game that has showing through out practice to be able to do the job necessary.

It’s the formation break downs on the punt, the lack of protection in the kicking game and assignment football. He lacked true knowledge of how to gain an advantage for us. He didn’t once make us better.
