Jay Bilas is the best

Look. Bilas wants D-1A football and D-1 basketball to be semi-pro with the players' not being required to attend classes. He'll do anything to advance that idea. My Grandmother used to say, "Be careful what you wish for, because sometimes God grants your wish." Bilas needs to realize that most private schools, including dook, will opt out of adopting that idea and a significant number of state schools either will also opt out or be told by their state they have no choice but to opt out.

Bilas is a good guy and very bright, but he's become so wrapped up in that idea that an injustice is being perpetrated here -- advanced by legitimate evidence like what we see in the posted link -- that he seems to have lost track of how impractical and destructive his remedy would be.

It's inappropriate for the NCAA to make billions in this way, and it's ridiculous that higher ed has sold its soul along the way, but I don't see how adding another commercial layer to an activity that's been ruined by money could possibly improve the system.

How about just the general fairness of allowing people to make money off of their likeness and fame? I'd much rather money go to the athletes than to NCAA officials.

I'd rather we not monetize that at all, but this horse is out of the barn, unfortunately. Completely inappropriate that the NCAA directly makes money off a kid's likeness. They shouldn't be in the merchandise business.

Take away the "tax free" status of college athletics...and the problem is solved.

How aobut the money goes into a fund for all the athletes at a school - pay expenses beyond what their scholarship allows?

Oh, you mean like a "stipend"?

If merchandise purchases benefited players financially you'd see Alabama/Georgia/Florida/Mississippi/Louisiana/Ohio clothe the entirety of Africa out of the kindness of their hearts real quickly.

Bilas' battle is on the likeness front. He's not saying athletes shouldn't be students, or held to academic standards. He's talking about schools, coaches, admins, everyone else getting a cut but the student. The worst part is the inconsistency in the rules.

Did you know that current Olympians are eligible to receive bonus money for performances in competition and remain eligible by NCAA? Why can't a FB or BB player get $ for jersey sales?

Would that be bad?

Would that be bad?
Nope.

Good luck to SU getting 3 star or 4 star athletes if that becomes the case though!

Because in FB and BB it's predominatly AA participants.

Is the mission of SU to produce athletes or to graduate students?

Graduate students and student athletes.

Why can't it be both?

Because it's not. Here is SU's mission statement:

Scholarship in Action is the bold vision that propels Syracuse University — a vision for education that’s not static or for its own sake, but breaks out of the traditional “ivory tower.” It drives us to forge innovative and sustained partnerships across our local and global communities. And that makes SU a place where students become leaders, scholars become collaborators, and the community is continually energized by new ideas.

Not a mention of athletics.

If the Euro model of club sports vs college sports were adopted, major colleges would be better off as institutions of learning.

Eh, this stuff was written in days of old. Sports is big business now and the schools fully participate in that. If you don't believe let me know how Syverud reacts when you tell him SU needs to ditch its financial connection to big dollar athletics. That ship has sailed.

Let's pretend for a moment that mission statements are not completely meaningless. How long ago was that written? Times change. Adapt or die.

It's just bothersome that the schools find new and better ways of making money but no matter how much they make it's always equally impotant that the athletes not get any of it.

The money is getting large enough that they may be worse off without the influx of cash from athletics. There's a reason the presidents like the TV deals and have played an active role in conference alignment - and it's not school spirit.
