Jay Bilas is the best

I love how the NCAA doesn't really respond to this, but when Cuse tweets about getting a Tyler Ennis jersey (after the Pitt game?) they went nuts lol.

Im not sure if you noticed (not trying to be an a-hole, just letting you know) but this was 3+ years ago. There was a discussion on here back then.
Wait, isn't it 2013? :)

Oops! Didn't notice that, you're right. It popped up on my FaceBook feed, so I never checked.
Never mind

When I first saw this thread, I was hoping he had commented on the UNC situation. Would love to get his take. Maybe one of our resident Twitter experts can get it out of him.

After Bilas' revelation, the NCAA took down the "shop.NCAA" feature. lol. Meanwhile, UNC's preparing to skate and the SEC's preparing for another FB/BB season with paper classes for "student athletes".

has Bilas had a comment on the UNC situation? I thought I read where he supported the NCAA's "Not our area" response.

If he did say that, he was probably being sarcastic.

As RF and I have been discussing, the "wheelhouse" (jurisdictional) exception -- that the NCAA doesn't want to be in the business of evaluating academic quality -- is murky and selectively applied. In SU's case, Fab Melo's paper was subjected to microscopic analysis .. even as far as obtaining the metadata of his adviser's computer. Although this was an academic quality issue (the province of the University), the NCAA punished SU for the transgression on the basis that there was an impermissible benefit to Fab (the added footnotes constituted "excessive academic assistance" to support his eligibility). This distinction was crucial because the prohibition on impermissible benefits (as opposed to academic quality) is a well-known basis for NCAA enforcement.

So you tell me ... where do 1,500 Fab Melo's fall (free/A's, manipulated grades, propped up eligibility, etc..)? Are they an academic quality issue (outside NCAA's jurisdiction) or impermissible benefits (well within NCAA jurisdiction)? And are impermissible academic benefits aok if you grant them to lots of athletes over a long period of time? The answers are obvious ... to everyone but the NCAA. We'll be watching, along with the rest of college sports.
