JB on Scoop in presser

I still like Triche though . IT was good to see him in and the end of the game in a 3-guard set. We may need those sets at Cinci especially and at ND. Cinci has been playing 4-5 guards with regularity, and ND has always been an outside-in type of team, even the years they shouldn't have been.

I wanted him to come back but he had to be able to get by his guy more off the dribble instead of depending on 5 foot passes.

1. He has done that and
2. He has added some awesome long passes into the low post for easy buckets that take away the need for more penetration.

Simply Awesome!

- only leader on team
- only pg on team
- one of best - if not best - pg in league when he shoots ball well
- would lead league in assists if he played more mins
- many people in this town can't seem to figure out how good he is and never will

Most important player on the team and has nothing to do with what he does on the court. Said it at the beginning of the season and saying it again now.

I tried saying some of that last year and people called me names. lol
:)

No everyone. Led the BE in assists. Can't be all bad. Is there a bad side? Is Scoop frustrating? Sometimes sure. But not as bad as what he gets (or used to get to be fair).

It seems like some fans made up their minds about Scoop at some point and feel the need to support that view with every mistake the guy makes, and miss everything else he brings to the table, especially this year. We haven't had a chance for a meltdown this year, but that announcer a few games ago was right about Scoop being the lightening rod(for criticism).

How any "fan" can listen to Scoop all year long, watch him put the team first, watch him mentor the younger guys, watch him lead by example and not pull for the kid to succeed is beyond me. It can only be agenda driven or by having one's mind made up and not be willing to process new data. Every player on this team will have a few What moments the rest of the way, Scoop included. But if anyone doubts he isn't doing what is asked of him or he isn't trying to help the team win when he makes a mistake here or there, they just aren't paying attention.

Scoop could make the exact same poor play as Triche or Dion or anyone, albeit a poor shot or turnover, and people will look at him with 10 times more fury than anyone else. Pretty nuts, actually.

Scoop is an easy guy to cheer for. He's matured so much in his time at SU. Senior Night is going to be tough this year.

Couldn't agree more. One of my favorite players of all time. Nobody has matured more from a frosh to senior. He's a guy who makes mistakes but he does it because he's trying to win bball games. I Love the guys who bleed Orange. He's one of them. He's one of us.

I agree with you. Its like primary color fandom.

This team is perfect for him.

He is not a #1 scorer, and by necessity he had to try to be that last year. However, he is an excellent facilitator, distributor, and also a good shooter.
Right...
He's at his best when you don't easily notice what a good game he's having because other players are doing the bulk of the scoring.
In other words...when he can be a true point.

The combined improvements that Fab, Dion and C.J. have made to their games has made Scoop even more effective.
There's so much more he can do now because here's so much more that they can do.

Recognizing what Scoop does for the team (leadership and good PG play) doesn't imply any put-down of Brandon. JB is putting down fans who have a penchant for faulting Scoop and don't see all his positives or don't seem to understand why JB is pairing Scoop with Dion at critical points in the games.

Brandon had a solid game last night. He is a combo guard -- plays some PG now, has in the past, is unselfish, works his fanny off. Valuable part of the team. Next year, he will be even more valuable, even as MCW emerges as the principal PG.

As for who appreciates Scoop, or defends him, the circle is getting wider. There is a reason we hear "Scooooop" from our fans, home and away.

In all the time I have been watching Syracuse play basketball, I don't remember a player who was willing to subugate their game like this for the betterment of the team, especially in their senior season, when players tend to shoot more in an attempt to curry favor with NBA scouts.

Scoop took 371 normal shots from the field and 157 3s last season in 35 games, taking on average 15.08 shots per game.

This season, after 20 games, he has taken 131 normal shots and 58 3s so far, averaging 9.45 shots per game. His points per game has dropped from 12.5 to 8.6. His minutes have dropped from 32.06 per game to 22.20. His FG pct has risen from 41.5% to 52.7%. He has become exactly what the team needed in order to be great. It is an amazing transformation.

Of course, this is the fan base that crushed Jason Hart for 4 years, without cause.

Exactly. I've always been a Scoop fan and Hart is one of my alltime favorites. Jason had the odd screw up but he left it all on the floor. He was a warrior. I remember early on when he called out his teammates for being soft...and they were. And yet a lot of fans and posters didn't like him (many of them fooball fans who wandered over to this board only occasionally)

I do think that JB might be overstating the fans opinion of Scoop although I don't live in Syracuse so i don't hear local talk radio. Any player who gets his own cheer, and that cheer can be heard on TV no matter where we play can't be in too much of a doghouse with the fans, right? But he has been a key cog in the wheel of 20 wins this season. I'll certainly miss him a lot when he is gone.

Someone else in the thread posted that his errors get magnified more by the fans and I have to agree. Triche did something last night...and I am NOT going to get into a Scoop/Triche thing so I won't say what it was...but if Jardine had made the same bonehead play, the usual crowd would have been all over him.

“I’m doing whatever it takes to win a national championship,” he said. “If they need me to play 25-30 minutes, I’m there for them. If they need me to play 15 a night, I’m there for them. Play the best 15 minutes I can possibly play. And if I do that, it’s easier for the younger guys to do that. That’s leading. That’s leading by example. That’s the thing: I came back for this team."

Good stuff.

BTW - where is all this hate for Scoop I keep hearing about? I'm not very local and I don't visit this forum as often as I used to. But I don't see it.

The fans aren't booing, they're scooping.

Scoop has been great, less mistakes, better patience and shot selection. Which is pretty much what I expected of him this year. Fans forget last season was Scoop's first as a starting PG this is his second. I give him a lot of credit because at the Garden Brandon and Dion played so well that Scoop sat a lot in those games. But he cheered them on and has played better since then.

I have to smile at the Scoop love fest in this thread. Only because there were threads last year way on the other end of the spectrum. Scoop has come further in his development since he came to this team than almost any other player I can think of. He truly is the calming and steadying influence on this team. Good for Good Scoop. :)

I think having Triche out there on the court when you know the other team is going to foul is a necessity and the three guard lineup worked nicely. I will admit to holding my breath when he drbbled through the double teams at the end of the game. His handle in traffic is a weakness.

I agree with this. And to add, as much as I love TNIAAM ... Sean is a guilty as anybody about being overly critical of Scoop. It's one thing for the casual not-so-levelheaded fan to bash Scoop, but I think Sean should be more objective. He is only a blogger but a very influential one.

Oh it's definitely there. I absolutely hated Scoop the past few years because the guy can be one of the best PGs in the Big East when he's on his game, but the second he hits a shot, he would always get into chucker mode and start forcing up awful shots.

He's been so much better this year though, but people still hate him. I told my roommate that when I went to the Villanova game in Philly that I was sitting right behind Scoop's family and the first thing that he said was "Did you tell them that they should have named him Turnover Jardine instead?"

I still remember last year when that rumor of Scoop cheating in his classes or whatever it was was going around, people were saying they hoped he'd get caught so that the team could improve without him being there to screw things up.

He reminds me a lot of Tony Romo in the way that no matter how well he plays, people will always be waiting for that one mistake to grill him for.

When you play PG for a historic program, and you aren't Bob Cousy right away...you will feel a lot of heat...just ask Mr Taylor on Kansas.

There was a stretch toward the end of the season where the anti-Scoop threads and the level of venom directed at him was pretty insane even for this forum. It tapered off a bit toward the end of the year right before the tourney. The Scoop vs. BT threads in general were out of control all year though - we had a few to start off this year, but nothing like last season.

Speaking of BT I thought he played a really good game last night in somewhat limited minutes - he and Scoop were playing off of each other very well. I was surprised he didn't see more action over Dion (although admittedly it's hard to keep Dion off the court of late).

Sure it's there -- just under the surface, waiting for the right occasion.

Fans will always think a missed shot is a bad shot. Not always true. Same for an aggressive move into the lane that doesn't end up with a finish or a good pass. If you just pass it around the perimeter, you don't make much happen.

A lot of the students were flipping out when Scoop threw up that weird floater in the lane last night with a few seconds left on the shot clock. Obviously he had to make something happen since there was only a few seconds left, but yeah, people flip out on him pretty easy. People were getting pretty frustrated with Waiters last night too. First time I've noticed that from the student section.
