Perhaps SWC already has a post on this somewhere, but I happened to catch JB on the radio last night and was just amazed at his ability to recall information.

A caller asked about a game against WVU from back in the '70s when JB was an assistant to discuss a big lead that SU lost -- 18 points I think they said. JB not only instantly remembered the game, but also remembered that it followed a loss to Rutgers that also allowed an 18 point collapse. JB then went on to detail where he went to eat after the loss, and even what he ate. Just so odd. I can't remember what I ate yesterday. JB wasn't even the HC.

There used to be a famous baseball announcer from the '50s and '60s, I forget which one, who always used to comment on fans in the stands at games. Stuff like, "Mrs. Myrna Smith is here at the park tonight celebrating her 60th birthday (or 20th wedding anniversary) ..." Fans always marveled at his powers of recall and the information that he knew.

Turns out that part of his shtick was making up all these supposed details of the fans in the audience. Oh, people would call in and write him with anniversaries and 100th birthdays and stuff like that, but turns out that he would often just make stuff up, to spice up the broadcasts.

Even I remember those back to back losses. If I recall correctly, our next home game (Colgate maybe?) drew about 3,000 fans after those 2 losses.

Who here remembers WICH(man) WAY TO THE NIT??

Yep, he's very "Marilu Henner-ish" in that his recall is amazing at times.

I still can remember those back to back losses to WV and Rutgers, especially that a-hole Phil Sellers sinking two free throws to ice the game, despite the masses waving their arms back and forth behind the basket. After he made the second, he mockingly waved his hands back and forth in front of his face, mocking our fans. One of my best friends was actually standing on the base of the basket stancion, frantically waving his arms and yelling at Sellers. Since this was the olden days, not a soul from the SUAD/Security did anything. However, his mother did see him on TV, so she grounded him (we were still in high school) for the remaining games of the season.

The next home game was against Colgate and all the bandwagon fans decided to stay home, as only about 4,000 people were in the stands at Manley. Jimmy Lee was quoted in the paper the next day as saying "only the real fans showed up last night." As noted, we went to the Final Four in San Diego that year.

I think that was the last time Rutgers was in the NCAAT--back when Phil Sellers played like 36 years ago. What a program.

No, they went to the Final Four the next season, in 1976. They lost to Michigan on Saturday and UCLA in the consy.

We'd been up by 13 at the half vs. Rutgers and lost 75-76. We were up 19 at halftime vs. West Viringia and pushed it to 21 early in the second half. I was glad they'd achieved a lead they couldn't blow. But they did anyway. :(
