Hammers AG, AG gets benched

Meanwhile Buddy ice cold and makes excuse that he's not used to getting bumped after being out.

The double standard he displays is a really bad look

Anybody disagree?

He said Buddy was giving effort even though his shot wasn’t falling. And that AG made a few terrible mistakes and was awful on defense without giving effort.

JB doesn’t care if shooters miss shots, but he wants effort on both ends

yup. Was frustrated with griff’s effort. Was disappointed with Buddy’s results. That simple. Now if it’s a pattern — griff playing fewer minutes even when he’s playing well and buddy is playing poorly, it’s a discussion we can have. On this night, JB had seen enough by the time griff carried the ball despite not being pressured and we played better with buddy at the 3, Joe and kadary up top. Gave us juuuust enough to eke it out. We’ll see what happens next game.

Agree. I'm a Griffin fan based on what he has shown so far. He seems like the kind of guy who will eventually get going and find a way to contribute in every game. But yesterday, he just didn't seem into it for whatever reason.

Ok, yet Griffin had more steals and rebounds in fewer minutes. Griffin had 3 TOs to Buddys 1. If only Buddys effort could show more than him going 1 for 12. I think its debatable.

These discussions will be ongoing until Buddy graduates though. Unless your kid is Doug McDermott and is undoubtedly the best player on the court, it's inevitable. It happened to Steve and Bryce Alford at UCLA, Fran McCaffery got some criticism for his usage of Connor his freshman year, Todd Lickliter kept playing his walk-on freshman son John at Iowa for some reason. Heck Craig Neal's son Cullen even transferred after things got so bad for him with the fans in New Mexico.

Buddy and griff sat for the same stretch in the first half when woody and kadary came in. So the difference was roughly the last 8-9 mins. That was after griff mis-dribbled — or whatever you’d call that carry near midcourt.

he took griff out at that point and we played well enough to take the lead and secure the win. We were down three when that play happened. We were +9 the rest of the way with griff on the bench. It’s in no way a long-term solution, which JB mentioned, but it worked to get the win.

Yup, buddy's a nice outlet for folks who think JB sort of sucks. And by he way, I'm not super excited by the prospect of Buddy playing 35-40 every single night. I just think people watch the game and that's all they are looking for.

Agree. I think the Griffin turnover and total lack of focus was the final straw for Jimmy. His head wasn't there yesterday and I don't have an issue with him sitting for the final 8-10 minutes. I also don't have an issue with Buddy playing until the end. Woody hasn't earned the trust yet so not really an option either.

Cuse

yup the people pretending to be arguing over griff vs buddy yesterday aren't really arguing over griff vs buddy

Al Maguire and his son Al

40+ years of watching this team. One constant is JB plays to win the game in front of him. He succeeded yesterday. Again. The agenda talk on this board is idiotic.
the notion that we have a bunch of individuals in competition with one another for playing time, rather than a group of teammates all pulling together in pursuit of a common goal is bizarre; unhinged even.

we found ourselves in a rock fight where most of our rock throwers couldn't hit water from a boat. the way that jb managed to turn it into a win should be celebrated. assuming that one is interested in wins, of course

I know - after the great run we've had the past couple years, and that drubbing of BC, the agenda is insane. I don't know, it's a conversation that's likely going to keep occurring until the results change a bit - "he shoots kinda good, and is, uhhhh, ummmmm, super smart (tries hard, insert whatever intangible you want)" is always going to be a lighting rod on a roster if the minutes are super-high and the shooting is off.

Yes. Even on an off night, Buddy helps space the court. AG not so. Buddy knows how to play in the Orange system. AG still learning. Should not be a discussion but for anti-JB agenda.

Out of curiosity, re: spacing, what's Griffin's career three point shooting percentage vs. Buddy Boeheim? Is it that big of a difference to impact spacing that much????

A coach can see effort. A coach can’t predict shooting percentage.

If the argument is that Buddy shouldn’t have played because he missed shots, that’s a ‘hindsight is 20/20’ argument. You can’t eyeball if a guy who starts 0-6 is going to go 6-12 or 0-12. How many times have we seen a shooter play 3/4 of a game ice cold and then rattle off 3 or 4 makes in short order? I’ve seen it a lot.

AG was god awful yesterday. Buddy was missing shots but at least playing hard and not mentally checked out. I would have preferred Woody at the 3 down the stretch but I dont think JAB is ready for that

You're assuming that what transpired is the only reality that could have occurred. And I know you know this is BS.

We played a team we should have smoked (line was what? 17.5?) and you are saying because we won, every decision was the right one? That team lost 70% of it's scoring from last year.

That same team lost its best player early in the game on our home court.

We should have smoked this team. Kadary should have started. Buddy should have barely seen the floor. JGIII should have been off ball. But since we eeked out a W against bad team on our home floor after they lost their best player, somehow all is right and JB aced it?

I disagree.

Not only should we have smashed that team, we actively recruited against ourselves by who we played and how.

So when is criticism allowed? Not saying I want to criticize anything, just curious. Like I said multiple times yesterday... I was completely calm. Still am. Don't really have any strong opinions. Wins are important. Clearly. What if Bryant made one of their final two shots in game 1? Does that allow for more criticism because we had an L on the record?
