JB said the players were tired at halftime

I thought braswell was in good position and his shots were open. He didn’t hesitate which maybe is what he was told his role would be...but clearly didn’t work out.

If you miss your first three, you need to make a play - get a rebound, get a steal, make a stop.

Then you get to shoot again.
Braswell shot and missed 3 threes in 3 minutes. Pretty sure he didn't have any other stats, did he?

He got a steal.

Who else would he start for?

Put Buddy next to Michael Carter-Williams for 20-25 minutes a game, and he would look like J.J. Reddick.

Buddy is a good player, but he is such a poor defender that you can't hide him at the top of the zone with another slow footed guy.

We've had so many slow footed guys be successful over the years, but they were shooters, and they were usually paired with an athletic guy who could get to the rim, or get into the lane and create open looks.

Girard is not that guy. He's a somewhat different version of Buddy - mostly a shooter, a gamer, high basketball IQ - but honestly, they are both sixth men on most good teams.

OK, that got him the second one. I just hope that Braswell plays more than 10 minutes the rest of the season.

What do we do if, say, Quincy has a torn muscle again this year?
We have to find out if some of these guys can play, instead of playing injured players (as we seem to have done this past few seasons ...).

If we had Buddy over Trevor Cooney in 2014 that team could have cut down the nets. We had absolutely no shooting on that team.
Give Buddy an Ennis, Fair, Grant, Christmas team and he is a weapon.

Buddy as one of the two primary offensive pieces isn’t a sustainable formula to be a real contender.
Sadly I don’t think we will be able to recruit a good 2 guard till he is a senior.

Nailed it.

James Southerland got 14 MPG his sophomore year, and 16 MPG his junior year. He was a better shooter than Buddy. I try to avoid the BuddyWars on this board, but in pretty much any other era of SU hoops stretching back 35 years, he’s not sniffing 30 minutes a game until he’s a senior.

It’s clearly not Buddy’s fault.

If we had him in the Cooney role it’s perfect.

We are playing him like he is JJ Redick which he clearly isn’t.
That isn’t his fault.
The problem is what type of guard can we can recruit who will come here? While he is the starter?

Cooney was also a very good defender and much quicker and more athletic than buddy. But your point re: shooting yes I agree with.

Ah I see the “Actually...Kadary isn’t very good” posts have started.
I thought I time travelled back to the Brycen Goodine thread by mistake.

I agree Cooney was a solid defender that 2014 team failed though because they had no consistent offense from the SG position.

I think Ennis and Buddy could have worked at the top with the wings and middle we had.

Buddy’s defense is bad he brings offense.
Buddy’s problem he has the SG position on lockdown and he isn’t good enough for that to happen when the talent on the roster is what it is.

That causes the backlash. Kid doesn’t deserve it. I hate the fact the NCAA giving every player a free year of eligibility will actually hurt our guard recruiting.

Not practicing for 2 weeks is a big deal. You will not EVER go out and play well in a game in that scenario. Anybody that knows hoops knows that. Bryant coach agreed.
All the Practice in the world isn’t going to make our starting guards play better defense. I saw enough matador defense to reel my expectations back significantly. Bubble at best.

Unless you are a starter then you get to keep chucking up shots and not play any defense

I'm sure JB regretted that we weren't ready and thought they would be a cupcake. That said, this guy for whining. Me doubts we ever play Bryant again.
Telling the truth is whining?

Reddick was a much better defender than Buddy will ever be, but i agree with your POV. JGIII and Buddy at the top of the zone is the worst combination possible.

I get that Buddy doesn’t deserve the backlash but as long as he keeps getting 30+ a game, he’s gonna keep being called out as a defensive liability. Especially playing next to JGIII. It’s inevitable...

I am one of the biggest Cooney fans you'll ever meet, dude was underrated the entire time he was here.

But this comment is 100% spot on

We played 9 guys in the first half. People are so hell bent here on getting their angry takes off that they don’t even really respond to what’s happening. He played a deep bench in the first half, so what are we complaining about? The defense was horrific when a lot of the fresh subs were in there too. We were also pressing almost the entire half, after 1 practice in 2 weeks.

JB said in the presser he should’ve came out of the press sooner. He liked that it kinda got us going after a bad start and created some turnovers and some tempo, but after awhile it wasn’t very good.

The second half, we didn’t look “tired”. We also only gave up 33 points and 4 3’s. Much more normal.

Only problem I had was no Kadary in the second half...though JB actually explained exactly why he did it, and also said that it would’ve been a mistake if Joe didn’t come through down the stretch with those big shots.

I actually was encouraged by how he handled the first half and got different guys some action.

To me it really comes down to one massively head scratching decision - giving Girard, who had a terrible game, and was a negative on both ends of the floor, the entirety of the second half.

I can accept that Jackson is always going to be on the floor. He's our best deep threat and he can get his shot off, and even though he's nothing special on defense, he is a little taller and longer at the top of the zone.

But Girard getting ironman minutes is baffling when he had such a terrible game. It just comes down to that one thing for me.
