JB thinks we are going to run more next season...

Howard's going to prove to be an essential piece to this years team, more so than being the true guard.

Frank Howard is going to drop dimes. Cannot wait. Can't teach vision. Best playmaker for others we had last year. Also the only PG. Not a coincidence.

I'm looking forward to Gillon getting to the line and often.

We really need Battle to be the real deal and true 1 and done.
We only have Howard/Battle/Gillon as guards

I think Battle/Gillon start and Howard is off the bench.

We lack a true SF who is long and can shoot. THat is why McCormick would have been a great grad transfer add.

We could have a front court rotation of McCormick/Lydon/Roberson with Moyer as the learn the system guy.

Next year's roster looks solid on paper but again we have absolutely zero margin for error.
We need 7 of the 8 guys to be solid and ready to go. Also it is obvious with little depth we will hit the wall atleast once during the season.

I'm all for running more but running more with 8? This team would be on fumes by January.
8 is very doable, but it requires smart substitution patterns. JB typically only subs when guys screw up or get in foul trouble, though.

Reading between the lines, we're going to have to run more...
To be able to run you've got to rebound.
And it appears we're finally going to have the players who consistently can get on the glass again.
Looking forward to this.

We really only have 7 guys. Chukwu and Coleman can't play together. They are just a really good C combo.

We have 3 guards to rotate. Gillon/Howard/Battle
We have 3 forwards to rotate. Lydon/Roberson/Moyer
We have 2 centers to rotate Coleman/Chukwu.

JB is going to run the frontcourt into the ground because Moyer is going to take some time to gain JB's trust. I asked and was told we are still recruiting people. Thompson probably gets minutes if he comes next year. We still could another guard if Howard gets into JB's doghouse again.

The C spot looks really good though.

It is doable, and it looks like he will be deploying three guards next season, rather than two, much like he did with the Triche/Jardine/Waiters team. The question is how quickly these three can be comfortable and effective at the top of the zone, because the front court depth and flexibility looks to be there.

Not true. Gillon is a true one, with a terrific skill set.

People really out to go watch film of this young man playing. He's going to be terrific for us next year.

It ain't gonna be 8.

I'd find 8 hard to believe as well; I'm just saying an 8 man rotation and running and gunning would wear down the team. I have no clue who else we are recruiting at this point and find it hard to believe Diallo is a viable option.

Reading between the lines, we're going to have to run more. With a bunch of under-experienced (and/or under-sized) guards, any half-court zone defense is necessarily going to be worse than it usually is. The head guy's not going to concede losses, he's not going to play man, and he's probably not going to press, so we'll rely on offense to win games. We'll want to run to make that easier.

I liked Barkley's line in the UVA game that when JB went to the press, he turned the game into our athletes vs their athletes. Playing halfcourt against an experienced UVA team was not working. But we had a meaningful advantage in athleticism that eventually brought us that win.

I hope JB means it when he says he wants to fully use our athleticism to our advantage.

If only. We could stand to play athlete against athlete more often; we've usually got an advantage there

If that were truly the case, then the zone would use heavy trapping, with occasional pressing and some m2m. When we sit back in the zone and let the other team pass the ball around, that completely negates any athleticism advantage we might have.

The difference between Triche/Jardine/Waiters back court is that they had 6 years combined experience going into that season playing the zone and playing our system.

That's why I'm expecting the backcourt to be a work in progress, particularly on the defensive end.

But I do envision them meshing defensively sooner rather than later. When that happens, this team should be able to generate a lot of offense with their defense.

Yeah, but then by the tournament they will be in great shape because during the tournament games with so many commercials it's like having 4 half-times per game.

Do you think playing the zone requires great basketball intelligence or just good conditioning and muscle memory from practice?
