JB's Presser after Buffalo

Odu and uconn stink and Oregon is a bubble team.
There are a lot of good teams now days. We are not in the elite group of teams that's allowed to buy all the top recruits and the NCAA looks the other way because that is how they run their business.

Previously JB was just questioning the toughness of the centers, now he is questioning the toughness of the entire team. Me thinks this team is not gelling like they were last year.

We should be getting top recruits we aren't right now.

I have less of a problem with recruiting outside of big men than the lack of development. The guys we have signed are legit ACC players, but they are all the same type of player.

Here is what bothers me, this is from the ODU post game press conference. I'm paraphrasing here, I can't remember the exact quote, but someone asked a question to the effect of :" Why aren't the big guys contributing or improving/rebounding?, something along those lines. His response was I can't tell you why, I can only tell you they are not getting it done. To me, if the head coach for 40 plus years can't tell us why, that is a BIG problem and red flag in my opinion. If he didn't want to call any specific players out or give anything away, he could have said something like we're working on a couple things, ball IQ, or I can't elaborate, etc...something along those lines. To say you don't know why just sounds terrible in my opinion. I'm not blaming everything on JB, but maybe he needs to step up and take some accountability too! It's never his fault. Coach, you aren't missing the shots on the court but you tell them how to run the offense, so it is partially on you. I'm sorry, it is.

Nothing in your statement precludes anything in my statement. ODU is a strong midmajor, their coach, Jeff Jones, coached at UVA (Played there) and got them into the tourney 5 times with a sweet 16 and an elite 8. ODU was 25-7 last year and didn't get to play in any post season tournament. These are tough teams to get on track against when your point guard is trying to get back into top form coming off a serious injury.

Frank getting into form is one thing. OB regressing, neither big man developing any sort of offensive presence, missed free throws, utter lack of toughness on the boards, Marek no longer having a position, etc. Frank isn't saving those things. I mean, easily his best game of the season netted a double digit loss at home. I don't care how good Buffalo is, that should never, ever happen. And for damned sure after a similar loss to a mediocre ODU.

He's almost there, by the conference schedule he'll be 100%. Buffalo may be the no.1 mid-major this year. I think ODU is a well coached team with above average athletes. They were 25-7 last year and look improved.

I remember the press conference that announced JB’s contract extension after Hopkins left in 2017. JB could not understand why people were concerned about the state of the program because Cuse had made the Final Four one year earlier and that automatically made that season a huge success.

SU finished 23-14 that year and had NCAA wins over 7, 15, 11 and 1 seeds.

Now he’s saying last year’s team was not very good. Last year SU finished 23-14 with NCAA wins over 11, 6, and 2 seeds.

There’s barely a difference between the two seasons.

That 2017 presser looks more and more ridiculous as time goes on.

Gotta hand it to JB, though. He still took a little swipe at Mike Waters for having the gall to point out when JB states an incorrect fact.

Which is odd since it's nearly the same team with more talent (Hughes).

"We've had 2 of the worst practices all year since the old dominion loss this week and I don't know why."

LOL.

Players under the bus...

I'm surprised to hear him say that because I saw a team with a lot of energy from the tip last night (obviously there were some offensive lulls mixed in before the wheels totally came off near the end). If anything they looked like a group who'd had a couple very good practices.

No offense, but that's crap. Running has nothing to do with actually running. Pass the damned ball. Which we did a bunch, but everyone pulls it out.

How about pass the ball after a rebound? I swear, this group doesn't know they can advance the ball without dribbling. I've never seen players so reluctant to outlet the ball. Brissett missed Battle for an easy dunk again last night.

While his comments are bizarre, I think they come from frustration. In my years of watching this program, I haven't seen a team that played with less effort than this collective. The NIT teams from 07 and 08 showed more hustle and grit than this group. They go through the motions out there and they get burned for it.

I wouldn't go that far. '07 maybe. But other than '02's collective dysfunction, '08 was the laziest and least savvy SU team I ever saw.

The current team has some weird players, though. How many times was Hughes going to close hard on a left-handed shooter's right hand? Uh...you had a scouting report yesterday, man. I've never seen anything like that. And Battle with the 20-foot twos with his heels on the line. He's good for at least a couple of those every game.

i always hear that recruits and their parents read these boards and get scared off. i imagine that they also watch these pressers and i doubt any come away with a favorable impression of JB.

I didn’t read anything as denial, excuses, or passing blame. He just told the truth. Is anything he said not true? We are not good. The staff and players are broken up about it too. And after seeing us play against Old Dominion, what did people expect? A blowout victory over Buffalo? I’m surprised we hung in for as long as we did.

I expected a loss and I'm a little more disappointed because a) we wasted a very efficient offensive night (for this team) with dumb turnovers and a late-game panic, b) a group of players who must be discouraged and in need of some positive reinforcement wasted a nice defensive effort, and c) Boeheim continues to have the same problems with putting his guys in a position to succeed. They opened a lead (18-11, I think) with the Carey/Howard/Sidibe/Dolezaj/Brissett lineup; everyone was producing; and he went away from it and never returned. He bailed on Carey after some strong play apparently because he airballed that open corner three where he seemingly got fouled. And he went with Dolezaj, a kid who should never ever play center, over Sidibe during the stretch where the game was lost.

I'm sad for Boeheim. He's a great coach, he's responsible for like 99% of what we all like about Syracuse basketball, but I firmly believe his best days are behind him. I'm concerned that recruits increasingly will want to avoid a program that plays ugly basketball and spends most of the season unranked. This is dangerous ground.

I was actually shocked when OB found Hughes early. I’d bench Hughes and rotate him in for firepower off the bench with JC

In ten years of watching pressers this is an all time low...

Your best player cannot be “solid”...everything after that was straight downhill

How many three point shooters are we fouling per game now? 3-4?

Maybe it's Brissett who needs to come off the bench.
Brissett needs to stop thinking about playing in the NBA and focus on playing like teams in the NBA would want him.
